This study aimed to analyze the impact of the spread of COVID-19 on college students’ learning experiences and make suggestions of tasks to improve supporting universities and college students. In particular, this study focused on identifying changes observed in college students’ learning experiences before and after the spread of COVID-19. This study also tried to find whether these changes in learning experiences differed depending on group characteristics and identify the most prominent characteristics of the disadvantaged groups, which suffered from the most negative impact of the spread of COVID-19. This study used the 2019, 2020, and 2021 data from the National Assessment of Student Engagement in Learning(NASEL) collected by the Korean Educational Development Institute. The analysis sample was constructed based on the data collected from approximately 108,000 students from 60 universities who participated in all three-year surveys.
First, in order to identify changes observed in college students’learning experiences before and after the spread of COVID-19, the change was documented in responses to various questions asking about behavioral and psychological aspects on curricular and non-curricular experiences of college students from 2019 to 2021 and a difference analysis was subsequently conducted. Next, the analysis of differences according to group characteristics in college students’ learning experiences, which appeared different before and after the spread of COVID-19, was conducted in various ways. First, the change in the average response value per major factor from 2019 to 2021 was calculated for each group representing the freshman class and the establishment type of universities. Next, by comparing the distribution of individual characteristics and university characteristics for the data of the bottom 25% and all respondents by major learning factors, the characteristics of the group with a higher distribution degree in the bottom 25% were identified. Finally, by constructing a three-point panel from 2019 to 2021 at the university level (60 universities), and analyzing the primary difference estimation results for 9 characteristics respectively, the significance of the changes in 2020 compared to 2019 and 2021 was examined. The main research findings are as follows.
■ Changes observed in college students’ learning experiences before and after the spread of COVID-19
The impact of COVID-19 on college students' learning differed depending on the areas of learning experience the nature of experiences. However, in general, the negative impact of COVID-19 on college students' learning in 2020, the first year of the outbreak, was extensively observed from curricular and non-curricular learning experiences to social interaction within the university.
First, the average of satisfaction with all types of classes, including major classes, liberal arts classes, and practical classes, as well as learning experiences such as indolent class participation, study activities and cooperation, decreased in 2020 compared to 2019. Among them, in the case of practical classes, the level of satisfaction decreased the most. However, all of the class satisfaction recovered to the level of the previous year or higher than the previous year in 2021. One of the findings to be noted in this study was that there was no real recovery to the level of pre-COVID-19 in areas related to class indolence, cooperative learning, internship/field trips, club activities, volunteer activities, interactions with peers and professors, perception of difficulties in college life, etc. In other words, it was confirmed that COVID-19 has substantially affected college students’overall learning and that the effect was still ongoing.
Second, the percentage of students participating in learning activities enhancing higher-order thinking skills and active and challenging learning activities during class after the outbreak of COVID-19 was found to be higher. This is, because despite various concerns, non-face-to-face classes due to COVID-19 presented an opportunity to be more immersed in learning activities of thinking deeply, applying what they have learned and connecting with other information compared to traditional lecture-centered classes.
■ Group differences in changes in college students’ learning experiences due to the spread of COVID-19
The major results of calculating the change in the average response value for each major factor from 2019 to 2021 by group are as follows. First, according to the result of analyzing various learning factors, the difference in responses between freshmen and non-freshmen in 2020, which is immediately after the outbreak of COVID-19, was generally greater than before the outbreak of COVID-19, implying that the crisis of COVID-19 acted more adversely to freshmen. Second, the result of analyzing the characteristics according to the university establishment type before and after the spread of COVID-19 made it difficult to draw a single conclusion as the pattern was very diverse depending on individual learning factors. However, students attending large-sized national and public universities and large-sized private universities located in the Seoul-Metropolitan area reported less favorable learning experiences.
As a second approach to analyze group differences in college students’ learning experiences due to COVID-19, characteristics of a group with a higher distribution among the bottom 25% of the respondents were identified per major learning factor by comparing the distribution of individual characteristics and university characteristics between the bottom 25% and all respondents. According to the results of the analysis, the quality of learning experiences of the bottom 25% in non-metropolitan areas during non-face-to-face classes due to the spread of COVID-19 decreased due to a number of factors, and the bottom 25% of small and medium-sized universities also decreased. Also, in terms of individual characteristics of students, the proportion of the bottom 25% of freshmen compared to the non-freshmen increased in learning activities factors such as club activities, interactions with peers, faculty-student interaction, and cooperative learning. These results indicated that the spread of COVID-19 had a negative impact on the learning experiences of freshmen, and this tendency continued in 2021.
Finally, by using the NASEL data collected from 2019 to 2021, a cohort was set as a set of similar longitudinal data in consideration of university characteristics and individual characteristics. With the group vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19 set as the treatment group, the DID analysis for the purpose of comparing learning experiences with those of outside groups was conducted and the findings are as follows.
First, the DID analysis was conducted setting a group relatively vulnerable to COVID-19 and comparing it with other groups in consideration of university characteristics and student characteristics. The results of DID analysis showed that there were still differences between male and female students and in various characteristics such as 'cooperative learning' and 'interaction with peers' except for university establishment types and class types(freshmen vs non-freshmen) in 2021. In the case of private universities, there were relatively more factors for negative experiences compared to national and public universities. These include academic-related faculty-student interaction, satisfaction with major classes, domestic and foreign experiences, and difficulties in college life outside of studying and learning. According to descriptive statistics, except for the satisfaction with major classes, the recovery to the level of 2019 was not achieved. However, it was found that national and public universities generated positive experiences in class-related activities enhancing thinking ability and active learning experiences and that private universities generated positive experiences in challenging learning experiences.
Second, a result based on student individual characteristic factors showed that male students, unlike female students, showed negative changes in terms of 'difficulty in academic and career-related college life' and 'a sense of belonging to the university and their department' in 2020 compared to 2019. In addition, it was notable that the group of freshmen had a negative learning experience in terms of behavioral and psychological aspects compared to the group of sophomores and juniors or the group of seniors. Looking at the analysis results for each major, it seemed that students in arts and physical education departments had slightly different experiences.
In the case of arts and physical education departments, students experienced less difficulties in relational aspects such as cooperative learning, academic-related faculty-student interaction, club activities, volunteer activities, and interactions with peers, compared to other majors, but they still experienced difficulties in basic learning ability. Lastly, looking at the results of analysis by students’ high school GPAs, students in Levels 2-3 and 4-5 were experiencing difficulties after the spread of COVID-19 in a similar pattern, and students in Level 6 and below had relatively less negative experiences than students in Levels 2-5. For reference, the students who had difficulties in college life in terms of non-academic aspects were students in Level 4 or lower. Negative experiences reported between 2019 and 2020 were greater than the extent of recovery reported in 2020-2021, which implied that learning experiences did not fully recovered yet in 2021.
Third, a result of the learning experiences in 'participation in various classes', 'cooperative learning', and 'interaction with peers' between cohorts considering university and student characteristics showed that the range of negative-positive changes over the three years was larger than the range in other learning experiences. This implies that these experiences were immediately affected by COVID-19, and at the same time, efforts at the university and individual level to address these problems were relatively greater compared to other experiences.
Based on the findings of analysis, some improvement tasks to support universities and college students were suggested; the establishment of a customized support system for universities and teaching and learning; the expansion and reinforcement of support and specific programs for freshmen; the establishment of an online teaching and learning system.
