The purpose of this study was to analyze pronunciation materials in middle school English textbooks for improving communicative competence, and to see how much these materials contributed to distinctive features of the 6th national English and communicative activities-centered curriculum. To achieve these purposes, this study analyzed pronunciation materials in middle school English textbooks, while adhering to the following procedures. (1) Pronunciation materials were analyzed by segments and suprasegments in pronunciation teaching parts. (2) The components of English pronunciations influence on communicative activities were analyzed. The result of this study was as follows: (1) Students learned segments and suprasegments of words and isolated sentences not extended discourse and dialogue. (2) There were some communicative materials such as game activities, songs, problem solving and role-play in the teaching speaking area and etc., but nothing in teaching and practicing pronunciation. So teachers had the burden of teaching pronunciation and students were only exposed to simple materials and activities. This study results led to the following recommendations: First, The English pronunciation materials must trigger students' interest and motivation. But there were no materials to change class mood. The development and enlargement of practical and active activities that improve students's interest and motivation as well as positive participation are also necessary. Second, to supply various pronunciations materials such as pronunciation game books(model books), charts and audio-video tapes in order to enhance teaching methods. In addition to educational situations for using these activities, are needed and the positive participation of teachers in the development of textbooks and materials is guaranteed and lots of flexibility are given to them. Third, We have to focus on working with pronunciation as integral part of, not apart from, oral communication and how it is implemented in meaningful daily conversation.
