Early childhood science education places emphasis on learning process. Therefore understanding what children think about scientific phenomena as well as how they prove and modify their hypothesis is critical in order to successfully carry out early childhood science education. In addition, many scientific concepts and cultural elements are embedded in Korea traditional play, and consequently help the children experience scientific concepts contained in traditional play as well as foster investigating attitude toward science. Furthermore, it may also help them to understand Korean culture and develop cultural identity. In this context, the purpose of this study is to conduct investigation on the constructive process, effective teaching methods, and the educational value of physical knowledge activities through top spinning and hoop driving which are Korean traditional play. These two particular kinds of play were selected among many kinds of Korean traditional play because they seemed to be suitable for inducing constructive conflicts. The study problems were focused on the following three parts : (1) Identifying the constructive processes of physical knowledge activities occurred in two kinds of traditional play; (2) Investigating the effects of retelling on constructive processes of physical knowledge as well as children's interest and attitude; and (3) evaluating how the constructive processes of physical knowledge activities through traditional play can influence children perception on traditional play. In this study, the subjects were forty-eight 5years old children belonged to S University' Laboratory school located in Seoul. They were divided into an experimental group and a comparative group. Each group consisted of 24 children. The experimental group was once again equally divided into two sub-groups. One of them did retelling along with the traditional play; the other group did not do retelling along with the traditional play. The study continued constructive for 20 weeks; 10 weeks were allocated to top spinning and the other 10 weeks were allocated to hoop driving. Each type of traditional play was played once a week, a total of 10 times. All the processes of the study was recorded by 8㎜ video camera. As the first part of the study, the filmed contents were transcribed. Then, a qualitative analysis was done on the process of top spinning and hoop driving in terms of their constructive conflicts. As the second part of the study, teachers who operated the session, evaluated children's attitude and their level of interest toward the constructive processes of physical knowledge activities through the traditional play in each session. The evaluation form with 10 questions was prepared by the researcher. The data obtained from the evaluations packages to verify the trend of each group's change and the difference between them were verified by SAS. As the third part of the study, children cognizance researches prepared by the researcher were conducted before and after each session. The obtained data were also verified by SAS. According to the result of the study, 59 subordinate behaviors spreading over 8 stages have been identified by top spinning. Meanwhile, 58 subordinate behaviors spreading over 7 stages have been identified by hoop driving. In addition, the group that had undergone retelling displayed more subordinate behaviors than the group that did not. Moreover, the fact that they displayed meaningful differences on the level of interest and attitude toward the traditional play also has been verified. Furthermore, changes of children's understanding on identity, succession, familiarization with traditional play were also observed. In conclusion, the constructive processes of physical knowledge activities through traditional play can promote the science education that emphasizes on learning process. Furthermore, it can be utilized as data for understanding children's development sequence. Moreover, teaching through retelling was proven to be highly effective on maintaining children's interest on the constructive processes of physical knowledge activities through traditional play. It was also proven to be effective on facilitating children' interaction among peers. In addition, the physical knowledge activities through traditional play positively changed children's perception on traditional play.
