This research sought to identify stress of clinical nurses and related factors, and to provide basic data that are needed for the development of appropriate stress management method. At the same time, the purpose lies in reducing work stress and in suggesting basis for the research and development of work stress programs. This research targets 200 clinical nurses who are working in medical facilities that are at least general hospital level, located within the City of Iksan. Among these, the contents of 180 surveys were analyzed after the ones that were not recovered or with weak answers were excluded. The contents of the survey were configured into two large groups; general matters and matters related to work stress. The general characteristics of the 180 subjects are examined, the following results. As for the age group, people between the ages of 26 and 29 topped the list with 42.2%, followed by those under 25 years old (26.7%) and those who were over the age 30 comprised 31.1% of total subjects. As such, most of the nurses were in their 20s and 30s. As the marital status, there were many singles. And the subjects with less than two years of working experience comprised 26.7%, and those with 5 to 10 years made up 26.1%. 23.9% had worked over 10 years. Most of the research subjects worked in regular ward, and most were regular nurses. Those who worked at least 8 night shifts per month comprised 30.6%, over 9 night shifts 23.9%, and 23.3% for under 7 night shifts. This demonstrates that supplying of personnel is not sufficient. The work stress of the clinical nurses recorded high score with maximum score of 5 and average of 3.69. This indicates that many nurses are working under high stress. And the stress resulting from conflict with doctors was the highest with 4.21, whereas stress from matters related to guardians and patients stood at 3.89. Others were; stress from mental pressure regarding medical limitations (3.75), stress from matters related nursing related tasks (3.75), stress related work schedule (3.69), stress from matters related to conflicts resulting from specialized roles (3.53), stress from lack of specialized knowledge and skills (3.52), stress from treatment of nurses (3.42), and stress from other personnel related and interpersonal relationship issues (3.42). When details were examined, stress from treatment for nurse was most keenly manifested among subjects between the ages of 26 and 29. The reason for this is that subjects in this age group is at a time when they are working with utmost passion while become familiarized with the hospital. Thus, they feel the conflict with the doctors and others of other occupations at a greater degree due to increased interface with them, especially since they tend to execute greater number of works. Compared to this, the nurses under the age of 25 felt stress from relationships with patients, probably due to the fact that they are novices in the working world and thus they are not used to dealing with patients and other general issues, which in turn exerted stress on them. Regular nurses reacted the most to the work schedule, perhaps since they work within the limit of 3-shift system whereas nurses in charge and chief nurses work outside of the said system. As the frequency of night shifts increased, stress reaction increased as well. Stress seems to results from working continuously at night without any time to rest and from the need to transfer the work to the chief nurses and other senior nurses in the morning. As for the stress related to educational level, the fact that the subjects who are at least attending graduate school scored a high score of 3.78, seems to indicate that the current process of setting up position/title or salary, which is decided by the working period and not by the level of education, neglects the educational level. Also, all the tasks performed at the hospital are without diversity, which means that anyone with at least junior college degree can perform these tasks. As for the marital status, singles scored 3.98 whereas married subjects scored 3.71. Singles tended to react more positively than the married subjects. Married subjects tended to be more emotionally stable that the singles since former have families that they need to take care of and have spouse who provides both material and mental support. As for the level of stress by different departments, the emergency room topped the list with 4.05. This is an indication that nurses at the emergency rooms tended to be more stressful due to overflowing work and interactions with diverse and numerous patients and people. As such, many nurses are mentally and physically stressed out. To resolve this issue, considerable support and consideration of hospital administrators are needed.
