This research is a descriptive one for figuring out the reality of cerebral apoplexy patients using complementary therapies. Research objects were 194 cerebral apoplexy inpatients of 11 general hospitals at Busan Metropolitan City and Ulsan Metropolitan City. Survey instrument was what I modified suitable for cerebral apoplexy patients, the questionnaire that Lee, Yoo Jin(1999) had made by applying the 7 categories of alternative medical treatment from America's Office of Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health. Data collection period was from August 19, 2002 to November 12, 200. Data collection method was to let patients answer to a total of 32 questions by themselves and in the case of patients with patial paralysis, to let them do after listening to the reading of the questions by researcher. A total of 202 questionnaires were distributed and 194 ones among them were available as the analysis data for this research after throwing away 8 insufficient ones. Objects' general and disease-related features, and the insufficient ones. Objects' general and disease-related features, and the reality of using complementary therapies were analyzed with real numbers and percentage, and whether to use complementary therapies with χ₂-test by using SPSS Win 10.0. The results of this research are as follows. 1. While 71.6% of objects has used complementary therapies, 28.4% has not. 2. The period of the most cerebral apoplexy patients using complementary therapies is less than 3 months(35.3%), the timing of using complementary therapies is in the middle of treatment(51.1%), and the reason of using complementary therapies is ‘it would be likely effective on treatment’(43.2%). Those who introduce complementary therapies were neighbors(27.3%) and family member(25.2%). The most helpful people in the process of using complementary therapies were family members(56.1%). The response after using complementary therapies was ‘it's not effective’(30.9%) and ‘it made blood circulation smooth’(28.1%). The satisfying level after using complementary therapies was ‘I'm a little satisfied’(66.9%). The existence of side effects after using complementary therapies was ‘no’(95.0%) and the better point of complementary therapies compared with typical treatments in hospitals was ‘it works good for body’(31.7%). 3. The most frequently used therapies were diet and nutrition ones(31.8%)followed by manual one(22.5%), spiritual0physical one(13.9%) and medical plant one(13.9%). 4. Whether to use complementary therapies according to general features was insignificant in age(χ₂=2.414, p=0.299), sex(χ₂=0.414, p=0.520), the level of education(χ₂=2.030, p=0.362), religion(χ₂=0.000, p=1.000),occupation(χ₂=5.020, p=0.159), spouse(χ₂=0.291, p=0.864), residential area(χ₂=1.701, p=0.192), the type of residential building(χ₂=0.000, p=1.000), average monthly income(χ₂=0.126, p=0.939), the number of family members(χ₂=1.285, p=0.526) and the person who takes usual care of a patient(χ₂=0.788, p=0.674). 5. Whether to use complementary therapies according to disease-related features was statistically significant in preceding diseases(χ₂=15.03, p=0.001), rehabilitation treatment(χ₂=6.341, p=0.012) and the condition of physical functions(χ₂=19.63, p=0.000). Especially in the case of having simple or composite disease, and receiving rehabilitation treatment, the patients who need a help or have no problem in daily life used much complementary therapies. The above results show that more than half the cerebral apoplexy patients are using complementary therapies for improving health condition, expect any effect on treatment and prefer diet and nutrition therapies. The patients using complementary therapies have preceding diseases, receive rehabilitation treatment and tend to use complementary therapies when they need a help in daily life. Therefore These results could be the appropriate material in developing nursing intermediary therapies for cerebral apoplexy patients.
