A or B or C의 문장이 오직 하나의 disjunct가 참이라는 결론을 도출할 수 없다고 주장한다. A or B or C A or B or C

The purpose of this thesis is to propose the alternative views of the phenomena of exclusive disjunction and conditional perfection that have been defying proper accounts within the framework of neo-Gricean theory of conversational implicature. As for the exclusive reading of disjunction, I first review Gazdar's(l979) account and Simons'(2000) critique of Gazdar. Simons argues that the implicatures generated by Gazdar's scale cannot account for the exclusive reading of the form A or B or C, viz. only one of the three is true. According to Simons, the exclusive reading of a disjunction with more than two disjuncts follows when each disjunct is interpreted as a possible answer to a single question. Nevertheless, her analysis fail to explain the fact that exclusive reading of disjunction is widely regarded as a generalized conversational implicature. In this thesis, I propose that the exclusive interpretation of disjunction can be successfully accounted for within the neo-Gricean framework. What goes wrong with Simons is that she ignores the fact that the whole meaning of an utterance φ should be computed as the conjunction of the true conditional meaning of φ and all of its implicatures. Next, I propose a novel analysis of conditional perfection, which hopefully can overcome the difficulties of previous analyses. For this purpose, I critically discuss two influential previous analyses of conditional perfection, and then suggest that the phenomenon of conditional perfection is the conditional counterpart of the exclusivity implicature of disjunction. More specifically, under the assumption that one core aspect of conditional meaning is material implicature, p→ q and □ p ν q holds. Then, the scalar implicature □ ( □ p & q) derives from the scale . The derived implicature □(□p & q) is logically equivalent to □p →□q, and the conjunction of the assertion p → q and the scalar implicature □ p → □q is the very biconditional interpretation of conditional.
