The main purpose of language use is communication, thus the inference which links 'what is said' to 'what is actually meant' is essential part for natural communication. In order to explain 'what is implied' as opposed to 'what is said', Grice(1975) said that human communication is presupposed by the 'general cooperative principle' and 'the four maxims of conversation' which both speakers and hearers try to observe for successful communication. If what a speaker says appears to superficially lack any of those maxims, the hearer is expected to go to a deeper level of the utterance searching for an implicit meaning that the speaker intended to convey. So, it is crucial for language learners who aim to cultivate successful communication ability to be aware of patterns of conversational implicature in target language. In addition, analyzing conversational implicature by comparing mother tongue with target language also helps learners understand cultural and linguistic differences in target language. Thus, this thesis is to reveal occurrence ratio and patterns of conversational implicature in actual conversation in both colloquial English and Korean according to the flouts of conversation maxims. Also, considering implicature as contextualized meaning, I largely divided those implicature occurred into general situation and conflict situation. I specially believe analyze on conversational implicature in conflict situations in both languages would suggest important guide for Korean English learners who need sociolingustic competence in real situation. For this purpose, I firstly selected two screenplays which will properly show everyday conversation in each country, then turn-takings are counted through all the texts, and the turn-takings including conversational implicature are also counted to reveal the ratio. They are sorted according to situational categories and maxims flouted and put under the statistical analysis. The second chapter introduces theoretical background which will explain the mechanism of conversational implicature. Specially, it shows the actual application and inference of conversational implicature by flouting maxims, which is the main method of this study. The third chapter shows the ratio, patterns, and characteristics of conversational implicature in both languages' screenplays in terms of both maxims flouted and situations. As a result, conversational implicature can be said usual, and it's occurrence ratio according to the maxims is generally similar in both languages. However, the overall ratio of conversational implicature in English was higher. This indicates they use conversational implicature to express their way of politeness compared with Korean which already has explicit honorifics. In addition, when it comes to the situational category, Korean has higher tendency to have more conversational implicature in conflict. This can be analyzed as follows. If Korean have an competitive conversation with someone who is in higher position or less familiar with themselves, Korean would use indirect expressions like conversational implicature. Also, each implicature in flouted maxims has its own patters. In the final chapter in this study, some implications would drawn for Korean English learners based on those findings. First, since English has its own polite expressions using conversation implicature, Korean English learners should be taught by systemic curriculum in terms of specific context with regard to politeness. Second, since the differences in conflict situations in both languages are relatively remarkable rather than those in general situation, Korean English learners should be offered situational teaching method with regard to conflict situation. Lastly, since the ability to infer metaphors is related to the ability to infer conversational implicature, special teaching methods for metaphors should be provided for Korean English learners to better understand sociocultural background and context in target language.
