The present study purposed to prove the assumption that art therapy based on art activities such as drawing, making and appreciating is effective for elementary school children, who lack abilities to express themselves, to express and sublimate their unconsciously suppressed emotion. In addition, this study suggests that art therapy may be effective in developing sound character, good interpersonal relations, positive self?esteem and new values of life. With the method, students can foster aesthetic sentiments and culture and, using colors, they can express the intensity of their sentiments in the emotional and psychological aspects. Art therapy is considered more effective if it can be utilized in art classes. Children who have depression, emotional instability and abnormal human relations resulting from bad memories in the past may resolve these problems through the classes. Art classes utilizing art therapy on themes such as ‘What happened yesterday’ and ‘The day that I want to forget’ heal students’ wounds in their memory and those on themes such as ‘New start’ and ‘What I hope’ help them have a bright and positive way of thinking. By creating art works and sharing them with one another, they can deepen their thought that considers others and have opportunities to think of themselves while approaching art works. Although the result of this study is not applicable to every children and hard to generalize because it is not quantitative statistics, this study was performed on the assumption that there would be changes. Thus, the teacher must have understanding of theories on art text books as well as knowledge about psychological issues. Then by the teacher’s guidance, students may experience positive changes. In addition, on a preventive dimension, such classes will be helpful for students to overcome obstacles such as anxiety about the future, interest in the opposite sex, school records and family problems.
