The purpose of this study was to examine in which way intelligence and creativity developed from early childhood through adolescence, what impact gender and school year had on them and how they were related to each other in an effort to provide psychological information to improve education. It's attempted to make a comparative analysis of the intelligence and creativity of different age groups from early childhood through adolescence, and the following research questions were posed:
1. Do intelligence and creativity make a different progress from early childhood through adolescence?
2. Do the subfactors of intelligence and creativity make a different progress from early childhood through adolescence?
3. Is there any relationship between developmental trends in intelligence and creativity from early childhood through adolescence?
To address the research questions, the hypotheses were formulated as below:
1-1. The development of intelligence might be different significantly according to age and gender.
1-2. The development of creativity might be different significantly according to age and gender.
2-1. The development of intelligence subfactors might be different significantly according to age and gender.
2-2. The development of creativity subfactors might be different significantly according to age and gender.
3-1. There might be significant relationship between the development of intelligence and creativity according to age and gender.
3-2. There might be significant relationship between the development of the subfactors of intelligence and creativity according to age and gender.
The subjects in this study were 1,160 minors who included young children, elementary schoolers, middle school students and high school students. At first, 1,200 minors were selected, who were divided into six different age groups, but 40 minors dropped out.
The instruments used to measure intelligence quotient were Chungang Aptitude Publishing's Preschool Intelligence Test for Children Aged 4 to 7, Korea Aptitude Research Institute's Intelligence and Learning Efficiency Test and Korean Educational Development Institute's Intelligence Test. The second one was applied to the elementary schoolers in their second year, and the third one was used for the students who were in their fourth year of elementary school to the first year of high school. For creativity, K-CCTYC was employed for the preschoolers, and the verbal and figure test A of Torance's TTCT was employed for the students who were in their second year of elementary school to the first year of high school.
The collected data wee analyzed with SPSS program.
To find out the influence of age and gender on intelligence and creativity in early childhood and childhood, t-test and multivariate ANCOVA were implemented, and Pearson'r was calculated to determine the relationship between the growth of intelligence and creativity. And the level of significance was tested.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
The gender of the minors investigated made no significant differences to pervasive trend in the growth of intelligence. By intelligence subfactors, however, the girl preschoolers outperformed the boy preschoolers in verbal area, and the girl students outdid the boys in the same area among the children in their fourth and sixth years of elementary school and middle school students. There was no significant difference among the high school students.
As for advance in creativity by age and gender, the girls made a higher progress than the boys in general, except the students in their first year of high school. Concerning the impact of age, the kindergarteners started to grow in creativity, and that lagged behind temporarily in the second year of elementary school, but it had a tendency to make a steady development afterwards. The creativity showed the best improvement in the first year of middle school and started to decline in the first year of high school.
The growth of creativity was under the significant interactive influence of age and gender.
Regarding the development of intelligence subfactors by gender, the girls excelled the boys in verbal intelligence. There was no significant gap between the boys and girls in number intelligence, but the sixth graders of elementary school were significantly different according to gender only in progression, as the boys outdid the girls. The gender made no significant differences to their figure intelligence, but among figure subfactors, the girl students were better at figure analogy than the boys among the fourth graders of elementary school. In the event of the first graders of middle school, the boys excelled the girls in block counting.
As for the growth of creativity subfactors, the girls made better headway in verbal creativity than the boys. By age group, the first graders of middle school made the best progress, followed by the fourth graders of elementary school, sixth graders of elementary school, kindergarteners, first graders of high school and second graders of elementary school.
Among verbal creativity subfactors, flexibility showed a rapid decline from kindergarten through the second year of elementary school, and then tended to make a steady growth afterwards. But that was on the wane again in the first year of high school.
The verbal originality and flexibility made the same headway as overall creativity.
By gender and age group, those factors had a tendency to grow steadily from kindergarten through middle school, and declined in high school. The first graders of middle schools made the best progress, followed by the first graders of high school, sixth graders of elementary school, fourth graders of elementary school, second graders of elementary school and kindergarteners. And the girls outdid the boys.
The growth of figure creativity varied significantly with age and gender.
Among figure creativity subfactors, figure abstractness waned rapidly from kindergarten through the second year of elementary school, and then showed a steady development afterwards. Figure elaborateness declined from the second year of elementary school to the fourth year of elementary school, and then made steady headway afterwards. Figure originality made a steady development from kindergarten to the fourth year of elementary school, and temporarily declined till the sixth year of elementary school, and then showed steady improvement afterwards. Figure openness developed steadily till the first year of middle school and waned in high school. Figure fluency grew steadily from kindergarten to the fourth year of elementary school, and temporarily declined in the sixth year of elementary school. That started to make a steady development in the first year of middle school, and waned again in high school. As for figure creativity by gender, the girls outperformed the boys in the all age groups except the first graders of high school.
Concerning the impact of gender and age on the relationship between the progress of intelligence and creativity, there was no significant relationship between the two among the kindergarteners. In the case of the second graders of elementary school, there was negative correlation between verbal intelligence and figure openness, and between overall intelligence and openness. The figure intelligence was positively correlated to figure fluency.
Among the fourth graders of elementary school, verbal intelligence had significantly positive correlation to every creativity subfactor except verbal originality, figure fluency and figure abstractness. Their number intelligence was positively correlated to figure openness, and had no significant correlation to the other creativity subfactors.
The figure intelligence had significantly positive correlation to all the verbal fluency, originality and flexibility, but had nothing to do with figure creativity except elaborateness.
In the case of the sixth graders of elementary school, the verbal creativity subfactors had significantly positive correlation to the intelligence subfactors, except figure intelligence and verbal originality. There was significantly positive correlation between the figure creativity subfactors and language intelligence and between figure abstractness and figure intelligence, but no significant correlation existed between the others.
For the first graders of middle school, there was no significant relationship among verbal intelligence, number intelligence, figure intelligence and overall intelligence, and no significant correlation existed among verbal creativity, figure creativity and overall creativity, either. In the event of the first graders of high school, there was positive correlation among number intelligence, verbal fluency, flexibility and originality, and between overall intelligence and verbal flexibility.
As for the relationship between the growth of intelligence and creativity by gender, the verbal flexibility of the boy students was positively correlated to their number intelligence and figure intelligence, and there appeared significantly negative correlation between their verbal fluency and verbal intelligence, among their number intelligence, figure fluency and verbal intelligence, and among their number intelligence, figure intelligence, figure originality and intelligence subfactors. In contrast, their intelligence subfactors had significantly positive correlation to figure abstractness, elaborateness and openness.
