This study purposed to obtain data necessary to teach sedimentary layers or strata by analyzing students' responses in the process of researching strata in outdoor. To achieve this purpose, this study set down 15 fourth graders as the subject. Based on analysis of the students' data and interview, the following results were drawn: First, according to the result of performing activity of researching diverse strata, the reason that children found it difficult was because they first touched strata and measured them out in the fields and because they thought about continuity of strata on the basis of the mass of the distributed strata in the field and assumed that the strata could spread only to the field. In addition, that is because it is difficult for them to see continued strata on a large due to industrialization of a city. Since the students had misconception on rock, they were not exactly aware of criteria for dividing strata. Second, in activity of drawing a profile of rock layers, they recognized them not as a unit of layer but as all lines on the surface of outcrop. The students were divided into those who guessed the inner part of strata based on their outer shape and those who drew their profile based on unseen part without recognizing the outer shape. In drawing a profile of unseen strata, they seemed to he short of ability to penetrate into the inner part based on the outer shape. Third, in grasping relative age or the order of rock layers, the children did not recognized the relative age of strata on the basis of time. Instead, they thought since strata with smaller grains of rock were weathered for a long time and piled up earlier than other strata, they were older than other strata with bigger grains. Otherwise, they guessed that the more stratifications were, the older the strata were because they were pressed for a long time and piled up earlier than other strata. This study let the children research strata outdoor and analyzed their responses to the research activities. Based on the result, this study identified students' diverse ideas on instruction of strata.
