The present study purposed to examine the demographical characteristics of persons with mental disorder participating in vocational rehabilitation programs in mental hospital, their desire for employment, and differences in their desire for employment according to demographical variables, and to provide basic materials for activating vocational rehabilitation in mental hospital. First, the largest groups of patients hospitalized in mental hospital according to demographical characteristics were those with high academic qualification, schizophrenic patients, singles, those in their 40s or younger, and Christians, those who had been hospitalized 3~5 times, and those whose disease duration was 5~10 years. Second, most of persons with mental disorder in mental hospital appeared to have a strong desire for employment, and the biggest reasons for having a job were personal achievement and satisfaction. Third, concerning differences in desire for employment according to demographical variables: There was a difference shown in the monthly rate of wage per disease duration that patients want according to the level of payment. There was a difference shown in the type of job per disease duration that patients want according to he type of business. There was a difference shown in the type of job per age that patients want according to the type of business. Based on the results above, we make a number of suggestions as follows. First, because persons with mental disorder have strong desire for employment and firm will to live, it is urgent to prepare desirable environment and institutional devices to provide them with job opportunities. Second, there should be close cooperation between mental hospitals and local community. Third, vocational rehabilitation of persons with mental disorder should be specialized and, for this, those majoring in vocational rehabilitation should be deployed in the field of vocational rehabilitation and supported so that they can commit themselves to the duty. Fourth, it is necessary for people to admit that persons with mental disorder can also live a high‐quality life through vocational rehabilitation.
