This thesis primarily intends to provide a brief overview of the need for and appropriateness of an English Class through Short Stories(ECSS) in Korean Secondary school. The ECSS contains the philosophy of making warm cherishable friendships in the club membership discussion through reading literatures especially, English Short Stories. Thus, it is the aim to investigate on applications the didactic functions of literature to an English class. The 7th National Curriculum sought to enhance learners' communicative proficiencies, so it focused on listening and speaking practices in quantities. However, this CLT approach was misunderstood in Korean English classroom. It is predicated on communicative pattern drills but it leads to listening practices, speaking repetitions and a rote-learning of vocabularies. As a results, there are no cohesions and coherences in the contexts and it only focuses on learning by heart for achieving a good grade. It soon become evident that such a goal did not suit well with the Korean exam-based educational situation. The effectiveness of literatures in EFL can be classified as three aspects; Student-centered, Psycho-linguistic, Cognitive-linguistic aspects. First, it takes on a student-centered approach. Reading literatures should be primarily an enjoyable aesthetic experience. Developing English Literacy through Short Stories can lead to make students as autonomous language learners. Second, it has Psycho-linguistic merits. Learners can experience much less anxiety and simultaneously gain language skills as well as literature knowledge. Last but not least, it has Cognitive-linguistic merits. Using literature in EFL classrooms can also develop students' language awareness. Therefore, it is necessary to teach English through literatures in order to develop creative thinking skills, logical thinking practices, problem solving skills and build up a deep understanding of a Human, an unbiased awareness of other cultures and an extensive knowledge of the world. Up to this point, this thesis is organized into three chapters. After introduction, the first chapter shows theoretical backgrounds. Whole Language Approach will appear in this chapter. And the importance of membership will be introduced as a background philosophy. Chapter second and third concern the design of the ECSS for the 11th grade Korean students. Second chapter is about James Joyce's Short Stories - “Araby”, “Eveline” - as a material. Third chapter is about Hemingway’s Short Stories - “Indian camp”, “The Killers” - as a material. Before designing the ECSS, it contains brief schemata on the authors and the stories. It is necessary for teacher to make sense the author and build up schemata of literatures. Thus, it contains the lesson plan and discussion topics respectively at the end of every short story. Conclusion concludes this thesis as the need for the English class through Short Stories stated again.
