The purpose of this study was to investigated the effect of varying bench press grip on the EMG activity of the upper body muscle during bench press exercise. For this purpose 12 male students from U university were selected(age: 22.5±2.7yr, height: 176.1±3.9㎝, weight: 72.3±8.3kg, lean body mass: 58.7±8.9㎏). To assess the myoelectric activities of selected muscles, surface electrodes were attached to pectoralis major, trepezius, front deltoid and triceps brachii. IEMG and NEMG were measured for each muscles. For each variable, one way repeated ANOVA was used to determine whether there were siginificant difference among three grip bench press. When a significant difference was found in three grip bench press, post hoc analysis were performed using Tukey procedure. From the above experiment, this study analyzed muscle activities and participations in wide grip, normal grip and narrow grip during bench press and concluded as follows: First, muscular activity of pectoralis major muscle was not significantly affected depending on the change of bench press grip. However, with wider grip, its exercise participation was increased. Second, trapezius muscle showed the least muscular activity during the bench press exercise. However, with narrower grip, its exercise participation was increased. Third, front deltoid showed high activity with three types of grip during the bench press exercise. However, its muscular activity and muscular participation were not affected by the grip change. Fourth, triceps brachii showed high activity with three types of grip during the bench press exercise. Also, with narrower grip, its muscular activity and muscular participation were increased.
