This thesis investigates the concept and method in reciting books based on the related literatures and previous studies about reciting a book and reviews the brain mechanism in recital of books so as to provide scientific and objective evidence for reciting books. Reciting books is a planned activity in which the instructor reads the books first, then the children and the instructor reads the book together, and gradually the children are taught to read the books on their own. In the methods of reciting books, there is reading out loud according to the children’s level of reading, reading together, guide reading, introducing books, etc. The instruction and learning methods in reciting books employed by the scholars are different among each other, but combining them together, their methods can be divided into the pre-reading stage in which they motivate the children to read the books, the reading stage in which they read the books for the children along with examining their response, and the post-reading stage in which they make the children review what they have read. The educational significance of reciting books can be found in the increased interest about books, the improvement in linguistic expression and thinking ability, the activation of curiosity and imagination while reading the books, the improvement in concentration and the fostering of emotion. Based on these, this thesis examined the brain-scientific significance of reciting books. When reading the books for the children, Broca's area and Wernicke's area located in the left brain carry out the activities related to the understanding and expression of language. Therefore, when reciting books frequently to the children, these two areas become activated and the understanding of language becomes easier. Reciting books make the memories about the story be positioned in the children’s synapse as a long-term memory through the repetition of recitation, reading together and reading on their own. Also, through the inducement of internal motivation such as curiosity and imagination, the level of norephineprine is maintained at proper level and makes it possible to maintain the active concentration. Reciting books provides an opportunity to compare the knowledge to the previous learning at the stage of accepting information and thereby makes it associated with emotion. This knowledge activates the limbic system in addition to cerebral cortex so as to maximize the efficiency of learning. The children can understand more quickly by listening to the story which is structured to be delivered efficiently. This experience stimulates the secretion of endorphins and makes the children remember that reading books is a fun activity and forms a positive reading attitude. Based on the brain-scientific significance examined above, the direction for reciting books based on brain science can be considered as follows. First, the books must be recited under consideration of brain development. The human brain has different developmental stages according to the age. Therefore, reciting books at the appropriate level according to each stage will increase its effect further. Second, the books must be read under consideration of the children’s emotion. When reciting books, the instructors must form a comfortable atmosphere so that the children should not feel more than necessary pressure. Third, the books must be recited repetitively. The connection between the synapses formed when learning new materials disappears if not used frequently, so it is necessary to have an activity for repeated recitation. This thesis has its significance in providing scientific evidence about recitation of books based on the results of brain science research and suggesting a proper direction for the recitation activities. However, examination of the classes which actually applied the recitation of books based on brain science was not carried out. This study expects the future research to be conducted on the instruction and learning methods of reciting books based on brain science and on the specific classes which applied these methods.
