The purpose of this research is to study the influence that individual characteristics of toddlers under the age of two and the interaction they have with teachers has on their play engagement, and analyze the mediating effects of the interaction with teachers through a channeling model. The following are the question for the research agenda. First, what is the influence that toddlers' individual characteristics has on their play engagement? Second, what is the influence that toddlers' interaction with teachers has on their play engagement? Third, what are the channels and mediating effects of toddlers' behaviors in interaction with teachers in regards to the relation between their individual characteristics and play engagement? The subjects of this research were 119 toddlers between the age of 24 months and 35 months, and 27 teachers attending 9 nurseries located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. A temperament test (TTS) and linguistic ability test (SELSI) were conducted to understand the toddlers' temperament and linguistic ability, and an interval-observation of play engagement and teacher-interaction in that corrected and supplemented by the researcher based on E-Qual. The collected data was analyzed through simple regression and structural equation models according to the research agenda. The following is the outcome and statement of this research. First, even though the toddlers' temperaments and linguistic abilities were shown to have a significant influence on their play engagement, but their gender did not. In terms of the different types of play engagement, the toddlers' temperaments had a significant influence on their differentiated and unsophisticated participation, but did not have a significant influence on their sophisticated and focused participation. The toddlers' linguistic abilities have been shown to have a significant influence on the types of play engagement, which indicates a close relationship between language and play engagement. More specifically, the linguistic abilities were shown to have a passive influence on sophisticated participation. This phenomenon is interpreted as a trend where the toddlers with higher linguistic abilities engage in more linguistic interaction during play or engage more rigorously in formation and symbol plays, which require a higher cognitive level. The aforementioned results indicate that the toddlers' temperaments and linguistic abilities have a different level of influence on the different types of play engagement, which suggests that their temperaments and linguistic abilities should be taken into consideration when guiding their play engagement. Second, the types of interaction with the teachers have been shown to have a significant influence on all the types of play participation with the exception of non-engaged participation. More specifically, all types of teacher-interaction, except modeling, were shown to have a significant influence on the toddlers' play engagement. Also, none of the types of teacher-interaction was shown to have a significant influence on the toddlers' non-engagement in play. Such result suggests that some of the types of teacher-interaction have a different level of influence depending on the play engagement of the toddlers. Third, the Mediated models for the types of play engagement by the toddlers according to their individual characteristics were shown to have a high level of consistency, and the mediating effects of the teacher-interaction were shown in all types of play engagement except non-engagement. This suggests that, when the toddlers' individual characteristics influence the types of play engagement, the level of such influence changes according to the teacher-interaction that takes place. Thus there is a need for play intervention that takes into consideration the types of interaction that mediate individual characteristics and play engagement in order to enable toddlers to become engrossed in play. A comprehension of the aforementioned results leads shows that the toddlers' individual characteristics and teacher-interaction behaviors have an influence on their play engagement and, notably, the teacher-interaction behaviors were shown to have a mediating effect when the toddlers' individual characteristics influence their play engagement. Therefore, a conclusion can be made that early childhood teachers must consider the elements that influence toddlers' play engagement when guiding play, and interact with the toddlers in an appropriate manner.
