In order to ensure the efficiency of school caring education, extensive research efforts should be directed into developing systematic caring programs tailored to children's psychological development traits. The purpose of this study was to examine school children's awareness of caring and their standard of caring. Four research questions were posed to serve the purpose: 1. What is school children's perception of the concept of caring? 2. What kinds of behavior do they define as caring? 3. What are their feelings about caring? 4. What sorts of caring behavior will take place among them in the future? The subjects in this study were 640 students who were in their third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades in two different elementary schools in Bupyeong-gu, Inchon. A survey was conducted with open-ended caring questionnaires devised by this researcher. Their answer sheets were analyzed and interpreted by three people under the supervision of the thesis director. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the elementary schoolers investigated knew about caring. There was no gap in their awareness by grade. By gender, however, the girls were a little better aware of it than the boys. Second, the largest group answered that when they heard about caring, helping others came into their mind first, followed by making a concession and thinking of others. The fourth greatest group felt good when they heard about it. Third, as for a definition of caring behavior, the largest group viewed it as concession, followed by helping others and taking care of sick people. Yet the greatest group replied that in school, caring behavior was to lend what their teacher told them to prepare in advance. Fourth, when someone else cared about them, the largest group was grateful. The second largest group felt good, and the third largest group decided that they would care about others as well. The fourth greatest group wanted to do something for him or her in return for that, and the fifth largest group deemed him or her to be good. When they cared about others, the largest group felt their heart was full. Some felt good, felt like doing it again, found it rewarding, was proud of themselves, felt refreshed or were glad. Fifth, the largest group wanted to be cared by others when they had a hard time. The above-mentioned findings showed that the elementary schoolers knew about caring and what kinds of behavior could be called caring. Actually, however, lots of problems take place in school due to their poor caring. This study is expected to lay some groundwork for caring education or the development of caring programs that teach students to care about others.
