Now-a-days, the concept of using wastes, which mostly content different kinds of biomasses, as a renewable source of energy has become a priority in the field of wastes treatment. Different biomass components of municipal solid wastes (MSW), like paper wastes, can be efficiently achieved as an energy resource by application of various thermo-chemical conversion technologies.
Biomass as a term is used to describe any organic matter (excluding fossil fuels), in which energy coming from sunlight is stored in chemical bonds. The interest in biomass as an alternative source of energy is based on two important points: (i) it is renewable, meaning that it can be used and regenerated continuously, and (ii) biomass appears to have much less contribution to the increase of the greenhouse gases than the fossil fuel, making biomass an attractive choice in alleviating concerns over global warming. Researchers are trying to achieve new energy resources using biochemical and thermo-chemical technologies by emerging these two concepts. Generally, H2-rich gas is produced in high temperature and long residence time. Although production of hydrogen from the direct pyrolysis of biomass is quite low; gas yield, especially H2 yield could be highly improved by catalyst addition.
The catalyst mixed biomass samples were heated from room temperature to 800℃ with the heating rate of 10℃/min. and then the furnace was maintained at final temperature for 10 mins. The different catalysts with main material, composition, calcination temperature and supports were used in this study. The activity of catalysts with biomass have shown to be different with them in pyrolysis. And the volume of gas and also H2 yield were increased during the catalysts application. The best yield of H2 appeared mostly at 10min residence time at 800℃.
