The purpose of this study was to survey how dental staff and patients would perceive the practices of managing and preventing the infection at the dental treatment rooms and analyze differences of the perception between the two groups and thereby, suggest the ways to improve the infection management at the dental treatment rooms. For this purpose, the researcher sampled the essential infection managers at the dental treatment rooms - dentists, dental hygienists and assistant nurses - as well as the patients. For this study, the researcher sampled the dental staff working for the dental departments of the general hospitals, dental hospitals and clinics located in Seoul and Gyeonggi areas and registered with Korea Dental Association, together with their users or patients, for a questionnaire survey. 312 dental staff and patients responded to the questionnaire survey. The results of this study can be summarized as follows; 1. If quality and kindness of the dental services were same, the dental staff put the highest priority on infection management, while patients placed the cost above all. On the other hand, the infectious disease perceived by the former group as riskiest was 'B-type hepatitis,' followed by AIDS, tuberculosis and influenza in their order, while that perceived by the latter group as riskiest was 'B-type hepatitis,' followed by influenza, tuberculosis and AIDS in their order. 2. Dental staff's perception of the need for inoculation against the infectious diseases scored very high or 4.50 on a 5-point scale on average. As a consequence of analyzing differences of such perception depending on the demographic variables, it was disclosed that female and unmarried staff aged 30 or younger perceived the need most highly. On the other hand, patients' perception of the need for checking other patients' infectious diseases scored high or 4.33 on a 5-point scale. Namely, both groups' perception of infection management was high. Such perception was highest in the dental staff who had worked for 6-10 years, and lowest in those who had worked for 16 years or longer. (P<.01). 3. 75.3% of the dental staff perceived that dentists and other dental staff were responsible for management of cleanliness and hygienics, and 66.3% of them perceived that the most hygienic gown was an one-piece uniform. And 70.2% of them perceived that the most hygienic hair style for the male staff was a tidy cut style, and 59.6% of them perceived that the most hygienic hair style for the female staff was a hair bound with a net hairpin. 4. 80.9% of dental staff perceived that gloves, mask and goggle should be worn to protect both dental staff and patients, while 13.9% of them thought that those equipments were only for the dental staff. 5. Both groups' perception of infection management at the dental treatment rooms scored 4.21 on a 5-point scale on average, but dental staff's score (4.32) was higher than patients' (4.10), which suggests that consciousness of and need for infection management are higher. Dental staff's perception of infection management did not differ significantly depending on their demographic variables. 6. 85.3% of the dental staff perceived that the tools used for patients' treatment should be sterilized every time, and 84.6% of them thought that such surfaces for treatment as chair, shelf and others should be sterilized once or more every day. 7. 81.3% of the dental staff had been inoculated for the infectious diseases. The target disease against which they had been inoculated most was 'B-type hepatitis' (59.4%). On the other hand, 34.5% of those who had not been inoculated answered that they had not had time for inoculation, while 24.1% of them said that it would be vexatious to be inoculated. 8. Dental staff's practice of infection management scored 3.32 on a 5-point scale on average, which was lower than patients' score (4.21). 9. As a result of analyzing differences of infection management practice depending on dental staff's demographic variables, it was found that dentists scored highest, while assistant nurses scored lowest. ( P<.01). In view of the hospital types, those dental staff working for the general hospitals scored highest, while those working for the dental hospitals scored lowest (P<.001). Such score was highest in the dental staff who had worked for 16 years, while that of those who had worked for 2 years or shorter was lowest (P<.01). And such score was highest in the dental department/hospital/clinic each treating 19 patients or less per day, while it was lowest in the dental department/hospital/clinic each treating 30-39 patients per day (P<.05). Summing up, it is deemed necessary to continue to educate the dental staff on infection management, while awakening them of the needs for checking of patients and use of the protective equipments and urging them to put such needs into practice. In particular, the dental staff are obliged to wear goggle and masks, while replacing the infected uniforms. In addition, in order to put infection management into practice, the number of the patients reserved and treated per day should be adjusted down and more financial investment should be made to solve such problems as shortage of time, obstacles for infection management and cost. Besides, since patients' perception of infection management at the dental treatment rooms was high, it is hoped that this study will be followed up by future studies which will survey and assess dental patients' perception of and need for infection management and reflect the results in the dental clinic practices to hthe dental treatment roomselp dental staff more aware of infection management and put their awareness into practice and thereby, create a safer environment for both dental staff and patients.
