In order to study the status of infection control of dental hygienists and the difficulties to infection control, 311 dental hygienists working at medical institutions for dental care in Busan were surveyed from March 16th of 2012 to April 15th of 2012. About 94.2% of respondents regarded infection control at dental care facilities as important, 76.2% were given education on infection control and healthcare workers at dental hospitals had more educational experiences than those at dental clinics. Only 26.7% were aware of the infection control index for model test on dental care institutions: however, higher level of awareness appeared among healthcare workers at dental hospital, approximately 36.7%, and perception levels were higher for those who were older. Healthcare workers at dental hospital showed higher grading scales than those at dental clinics on questionnaires towards the actual condition of personal safety and protective coverings. Significant differences were shown on all topics related with working period. Most common reasons for not using protective coverings were working experience used to recognize how to wash their hands at a significantly higher rate and the actual hand washing perfomance rate before and after each patient care were higher and the most frequently used detergents were liquid soap with antibacterial ingredients. Regular check-ups for microbiological examination on water tube were done more frequently done by dental hospitals than dental clinics and reasons for not doing such regular check-ups were 'others', for example, 'didn't know'. Workers at dental hospitals seemed to drain the water tube of handpiece and ultrasonic scaler and 3-Way syringe more frequently than other workers at differenct working place(p<0.01). Most frequently used surface care managements of dental equipments and utilities were 'alcohol sponge wash', headrest and hand grips and switches of dental unit chair were commonly cleaned by water, spittoon were commonly cared with 'surface sterilizer'. According to these results it can be concluded that importances of infection control are widely recognized but that such awareness is not directly put into reactions. In order to encourage infection control implementation, urgent need exists for an institutional framework providing infection control standard, especially for administrative guidelines promotion for water tube and utility surface. Since most common obstacles to dental infection control were inconvenience operation, practical refresher training of infection control should be prepared for dental hygienists so that improvement in infection control actions can be achieved. Also, workers from dental clinics seem to be insufficient for infection controls than those from dental hospitals, reinforced systematic support is highly demanded regarding infection control towards small scale clinics.
