The purpose of this study is to test effects of perceived parenting attitudes and parent attachment on peer attachment and aggression in adolescents For this purpose, specifically, relations among perceived parenting attitudes, parent attachment, peer attachment, and aggression are examined. The effects of perceived parenting attitudes and parent attachment on peer attachment are examined, with differences tested by gender. The effects of perceived parenting attitudes and parent attachment on physical aggression are examined, with differences tested by gender. This study was conducted with 507 male and female students at middle schools in Daejeon. The scales in this study included PBT to measure perceived parenting attitudes, IPPA-R to measure parent attachment, IPPA to measure peer attachment, and A`Q-K to measure aggression. With the collected data, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were carried out by using an SPSS statistical program. The results are as follows: First, as for relations among perceived parenting attitudes, parent attachment, peer attachment, and aggression, there was significantly positive correlation between perceived parenting attitudes and the general attachment to parents and peers and each of its sub-factor; there was significantly negative correlation between perceived parenting attitudes, attachment to parents and peers, and physical aggression; and other variables than those of a sense of alienation from parents and peers and parents' controlling parenting attitudes were not significantly correlated with verbal aggression. Second, as for effects of perceived parenting attitudes and attachment to parents on peer attachment, father's parenting attitudes and attachment to father had greater effects on a sense of alienation alone among sub-factors of peer attachment, while attachment to mother had greater effects on communication and a sense of alienation. Third, parents' parenting attitudes were found to affect peer attachment. Parents' autonomous and receptive parenting attitudes were related to high reliability among peers; students perceiving parents' attitudes as autonomous, mothers' attitudes as receptive, and father's attitude as controlling showed better communication; and those perceiving parents' parenting attitudes as controlling and mother's parenting attitudes as autonomous attracted peers' attention. Fourth, attachment to parents was found to affect peer attachment. Students perceiving free communication with parents got high reliability from peers and made free communication actively; those feeling that parents believed them felt a less sense of alienation in peer relations; and those who felt getting no attention and failed to have smooth communication with father felt a more sense of alienation. Fifth, parents' parenting attitudes were found to affect physical aggression. Both parents' controlling and autonomous parenting attitudes had significant effects on physical aggression. Sixth, attachment to parents was found to affect physical aggression. For both father and mother, such sub-factors of attachment to parents as a sense of reliability, communication, and a sense of alienation all had significant effects on students' physical aggression. Seventh, there were differences in effects of parents' parenting attitudes and attachment to parents on peer attachment by gender. Girls got high scores in such sub-factors of peer attachment as a sense of reliability, communication, and a sense of alienation in relation to father; boys got high scores in communication in relation to mother; and girls showed a more sense of alienation. This study is significant by revealing the effects of perceived parenting attitudes and parent attachment on peer attachment and aggression to confirm importance of parents' roles and parent-child relationships in preventing aggression and forming attachment to peers.
