School is a vigorous site where various values and authorities among teacher, student and parents clash with one another. Today’s school ceased to be a place where teachers unilaterally instructed teaching, students passively learned, and parents expressed their respect for the teacher. The current society has significantly progressed into a plural society in which various values are respected and promoted. The old method of the unilateral communication and demands, the unconditional reception and recognition, is now invalid. The expression, ‘collapsed classroom,’ symbolizes the disruption of the school’s educational function. Its main culprit is the failure of the school to take effective measures on the overpowering doctrine of the ‘education focused on college entrance exam.’ Although such confusion regarding the role of school was the major cause of the problem, the absence of communication among members of the school and the conflict among various desires also played a role in causing the current problem. Based on the above perception, many studies have been conducted on the school community disruption since the late 1990s. However most studies have been made either with a premise of the policy and system reform in the entire education sector, or with a focus on the mutual influence variables within the relationship between teacher and parents, teacher and administrator, teacher and student, and between teachers. It is only recent that the studies on the teacher-student conflict started to emerge. However such studies do not discuss specific methods to resolve the conflict. Thus the aim of this study was to suggest a school counselor (professional counseling teacher, professional guest counselor, and teacher in charge of counseling) as the well-qualified mediator to assist teacher and student to solve problems on their own. Subsequently it was also the aim of this study to develop a counseling model to mediate conflicts by applying mediation model, creative problem-solving, and short-term counseling. The counseling model developed in this study to mediate teacher-student conflicts was designed to be applied for 5 sessions with 5 steps. The first step was the process of understanding the problem and it included the following: explore the reality of the conflict; identify the problem; and set a goal to solve the problem on one’s own. The second step was to create various ideas for the problem-solving. Here, cooperation was promoted to identify the cause of the conflict and a variety of ideas were explored to resolve the conflict. The third step was the process to explore solutions, accept the demands of each other, and promise to implement the selected solution. Here, the actual mediation took place and the counselor helped to find solutions together with and in presence of the teacher and the student in conflict. The promise was made to execute the viable solution. The fourth step was the implementation process after the solution acceptance and before the evaluation. Here, the chosen solution was actually executed into action according to the specific plans. Finally the fifth step was the evaluation in which the actual implementation was accessed in comparison with the promised action. Next, it was examined whether the developed model can be efficiently applied to the actual conflict situation. Accordingly a series of the counseling processes presented by this model were described in detail and the effect of the model was verified. The subjects of this study were selected upon receiving the agreement from a counselee who requested the counselor to mediate a case and the counterpart who was in conflict with the requester. As for the data collection, documents data, in-depth interview, descriptive questionnaire, and observation were applied. As for the data analysis, content analysis method was used. The subjects of this study were the following 6 counselees involved in 3 cases: the 2nd grade female student in vocational high school who was in conflict with her home room teacher; the 1st grade female student in college preparatory high school who was in conflict with the math teacher; and the 3rd grade male student who was in conflict with the personality development teacher. The 6 counselees in the above 3 cases were subjected to a private counseling and mediation process for 5 sessions in a month. The counseling and mediation were executed according to the counseling model developed in this study to mediate the conflict. A follow-up evaluation was conducted after 2 weeks from the completion of the sessions, and a semi-structured interview was conducted with the 6 counselees. The counselee evaluation, counseling effect, and durability of the change were examined in the follow-up evaluation. As a result of the verification it was found that the counseling model developed in this study to mediate the teacher-student conflict was effective to resolve their conflict at school. The significance of this study lies in presenting a mediation counseling to be used in the actual school environment. Moreover it can be used as a useful tool to resolve the conflicts between the subjects at school, hence enhancing the school’s educational performance. However there were following limitations in the verification of the model presented in this study. First, verification of the study was made personally by the very author of the study, hence making it difficult to exclude the author’s influence. Second, the number of the cases to be verified was limited, hence making the generalization of the study result difficult.
