A Study on Adjustment Modes of Telling Shown in Story Retelling : On Third-Graders of Elementary School원문보기

The purpose of this study is to analyze adjustment modes of telling shown in story retelling of children and to research educational possibility of story retelling. For doing this, the author of this study selected episodes as the research texts, and divided the subjects into three groups, each of them performed tellers and listeners. In this study, a speaker read a given episode, performed primary story telling to a listener, and then performed secondary story retelling to another listener. This process was recorded and transcribed for analyzing differences in adjustment modes of telling in the telling process. The adjustment modes of telling were divided into omission, changing, repetition, and redundant words based on the telling calculation techniques presented by Matin Bygate in Speaking, for comparison and analysis of the primary story telling and the secondary story retelling of a speaker. This study is for identifying appearance of a variable "retelling" that is frequent in daily life is shown in adjustment modes of telling and its possibility and values as an educational method in speaking education. For doing this, Chapter 2 presented theoretical backgrounds for the research. The conceptual problems and educational values of the "stories" used as texts in this study and storytelling were investigated, and operational definition on "story retelling" for this study was established. Then, the adjustment modes of telling by Matin Bygate were reorganized for the purpose of this study. In Chapter 3, the author analyzed changes in adjustment modes of telling based on the data of transcription of the primary story telling and the secondary story retelling of the speakers. The data were classified into adjustment modes of telling investigated from the aspect of "story structure" and those modes shown on the basis of "retelling" variable. The adjustment modes of telling shown from the aspect of "story structure" were then divided into "omission" in which a speaker omits parts of original texts and "changing" in which a speaker replaces expressions in original texts with others during speaking. "Omission" is a mechanism promoting production of speaking of a speaker, and in this study, omissions of certain contents were shown with consistency in the primary and secondary story telling. This result revealed a framework of story that a speaker had and also served as an indicator with which degrees of difficulties of a speaker in speaking. "Changing" is a phenomenon in which a speaker replaces contents of original texts with other expressions that he/she is familiar with or easy to understand. This result also revealed with consistency in the primary and secondary story telling. As for the adjustment modes of telling shown on the basis of "retelling" variable, "repetition" in words or phrases and "redundant words" as hesitation during speaking were classified. "Repetition" is a natural phenomenon occurring when a speaker is producing what to tell in his/her head, and analysis of the phenomenon shows modes and difficulties the speaker was experienced. "Redundant words" are hesitations shown in speaking process, not errors but a mode of self-adjustment in which contents of speaking are produced, checked, and controlled. Based on the results of causal analysis via analysis of speaking contents of speakers and from the frequency of redundant words and differences , most speakers were reduced in frequency of redundant words in the secondary story retelling. Based on the results of this study, the educational possibility of "retelling" is suggested as follows. First, it presents measures to achieve the objectives of speaking education, involving practical speaking phenomena into speaking instruction. Second, based on the modes shown in adjustment processes of telling, it presents fresh views and consequently educational methods on speaking education. Third, it presents instructions matching individual students' speaking abilities and feedbacks, and via analysis of individual's speaking modes, objective assessment, self-checking, and feedbacks can be performed.
