The purpose of this qualitative research is primarily about inquiries into an infants' understanding from the experiences of picture book reading. For this research, a participant, a one year old boy, was observed during his daily life with a peer and his mother. This research consists of participation observations and in-depth interviews, and to be more accurate, the phenomenology is chosen as a methodology. The data was collected from March 2008 to February 2009 by both participated observations and in-depth interviews. For this data the researcher visited the participant at his friend’s house regularly once a week. Every observation was recorded with camcoders, MP3 players, cameras, and field notes. The use of a camcorder was especially helpful to demonstrate each phenomenon in detail. Unstructured interviews were mostly chosen for in-depth interviews. Finally, several questions were asked to the participant’s mother after reading pictures books in order to understand the participant’s verbal and non verbal reactions. The theme was derived by the analysis of data that includes 421 pages. The researcher coded each theme by reading the texts carefully. From this process, 42 significant themes were drawn. Below is the summary of outcomes from this research. First, a one year old infants’ experience of reading presents new aspects as they grow up. The aspects of a one year old infant from reading picture books could be enumerated to sensory exploration, eye-hand coordination, verbal expression, imitating story of picture books, responding to story of picture books, and being familiar with picture books in daily life. As one year old infants add more months to their life, their reading experience gradually improves. Particularly, this experience is correlatively changed with their previous actions. Below is the sub-category of those aspects. Sensory exploration means that infants explore picture books only the use of their senses. For example, sucking, touching, tapping, throwing, and feeling books could be sub-categorized. When infants are able to perform cognitive and coordinative abilities they can turn over pages and also point and refer to something, which is called hand-eye coordination. For in the case of turning over pages, in the period of 16 month old, infants can only turn pages by their ability of eye-hand coordination. However, about 2 month later, infants may understand their mother’s direction and move their hands to find something from books. In addition, this combines with verbal language in the period of 19 months old. Pointing objects from picture books appears in infants when they are about 19 months old. It starts as pointing to command attention, however it combines with verbal language about 3 months later. Ability of reference is shown in the age of 19 months. At the beginning, infants only point or bring what they can see, however they become able to refer to reminiscence, even though it is not visible. Verbal expressions could be sub-categorized to book babbling, imitating language, labeling pictures, communicating, and speaking. The babbling between 14 and 15 months old infant is not comprehensible, but a few months later, an infant tries to add words in the middle of book babbling. Imitating language means that an infant repeats what a mother says. It appears when they are 17 months old with imitating a single word. Furthermore, about 2 months later, they could possibly expand to two words and speak pivot words. Later, when they become around 21 months old, they may use different parts of speech such as nouns and verbs. However, when they start to read picture books in the conversational method a month later, they may alter labeling to answer a mother’s question. Finally, an infant speaks the word ‘book’ to express that they would like to listen to the story from the book. Imitating story of picture books consists of direct imitation, recognition of memorized behavior, and connected recognition of memorized behavior. Imitation appears at the age of 16 months, while an infant also reproduces simple, direct movements. However, afterwards movements become bigger and are repeated. Recognition of memorized behavior and connected recognition of memorized behavior emerge at the 19th month after birth. In this period, an infant learns both mental representation and object permanence. As a one year old infant has the ability to understand and is capable of mental strategy, he begins to connect his experience to stories and remembers stories. At 21 months, infant can only sympathized with the main character of book. However, 3 months later, an infant may try to discover ways to help them. Memory is established when they are 22 months old, shown as an infant remembers what is hidden in the flap-book. Being familiar with picture books in daily life is typically shown when a one year old infant is request to read books and read them prior to their bed time. Their request to read emerges at 16 months; demonstrated by taking books off the shelf and bringing them to their mother. When they become 23 months old, to express their active request, they name the objects of books. During this same period, they ask their mother to read books at bedtime. Secondly, the methods of interactions with their mother while reading picture books may depend on the age of the infant. Likewise one year old infants obtain various experiences from the interactions with their mother. Major ways of interaction contain attention-recruiting, elaborating, questioning, and giving feedback. With the exception of attention-recruiting, the methods of interaction are variable, depending on the age of the infant. Before reading a book, the mother recruits attention by calling the infants name, telling a story, using admiring words, and pointing. The younger an infant is, the more mother gives more explanations about text, characters, and descriptions. However, when an infant becomes 16 months old, most questioning takes place through explanation. It is here they starts to ask “where?” and three months later other questions include; “where?” what? who? Each question varies according to the situation. At the beginning of this study, the mother gave only good comments, however, as the infant grew up, her comments expanded to verbal imitation, modification, and explanation. In addition, during research, emotional interaction shown such as touching during reading. Through reading with his mother, an infant instinctively enters into the books. Therefore, an infant experiences the picture book that connect to daily life, awareness about toilet and indirect experience, knowing oneself, understanding about particular things, confirming experiences, sharing emotions and beginning of understanding with others by interacting with mother. Thirdly, a one year old infant understands social behavior with its peer throughout reading picture books A one year old infant can experience social behavior through interesting in peers who response to the books, approaching to peers who are reading the books, smiling and touching, symbolic playing with peers and struggling with peers by their will to possess the books. Interesting in peer who response about the books explains that an infant watches its peers who are in the same space. In this case, this happens when peers read books with their mothers when he does not play with toys. Approaching to peers who are reading the books means that an infant approaches to peers who read books with their mother. Also, an infant may look and smile at peers while reading picture books. As they sit together, this is seen through intentional and unintentional touching. Symbolic play could be developed to include the fact of pretending as character from reading picture books. Therefore infant could have broad experiences. Sometime when infant was taken the books that he reads with mother and takes other books, they struggle.
