The purpose of the present study was to investigate the anti- depression effect of malt-fermented red ginseng(MRG) through forced swimming test in mice. After the first measurement of immobility time, the mice were divided into a control group, Rg3 group, MRG group, and RG group to match the swimming time in each group. The immobility time of a control, Rg3, MRG and RG treated groups after administration for 2 days was 118.6 ± 6.2 sec, 22.0 ± 4.6 sec, 75.6 ± 4.6 sec, and 81.6 ± 5.9 sec, respectively. The effect of MRG and RG treated groups on the immobility time for additional 14 days was significantly decreased in comparison with a control group. Serum levels of total protein was significantly increased MRG and RG treated groups compared with a control group (P < 0.01). However, lactate dehydrogenase and creatine phosphokinase were not significant between a control group and other groups. Also the blood urea nitrogen level did not show significant difference compared with control group, except Rg3 treated group. In summary, these results suggest that MRG might be candidate as anti- depression agents.
