The nutraceutical role of fermented Omija (Schizandra chinensis) fruit beverage (FOB) and hot water extracts of Omija (Schizandra chinensis) were determined through the analysis of biological activity. Antioxidative activities were measured by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity. DPPH radical scavenging activity of FOB was remarkably increased in a dose-dependent manner and was about 69.1%. The inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme and tyrosinase inhibitory activity was remarkably increased in a dose-dependent manner and was about 94.8% and 91%, respectively. In addition, FOB showed strong antimicrobial activities on Escherichia coli (E. coli). The inhibitory activity of FOB on α-amylase and α-glucosidase were determined to be 100% and 65%, respectively. Nitrite scavenging activity, which was measured at various pH conditions (1.2, 3.0, 6.0), were about 96.1%, 72.3%, and 68.3%, respectively. The FOB also showed the elastase inhibition effect of 78.0%. These results revealed that FOB has a strong antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity and exhibits the angiotensin converting enzyme, elastase, and tyrosinase inhibitory activity.
The nutraceutical role of Omija (Schizandra chinensis) hot water extract was determined through the analysis of antioxidative and α-glucosidase inhibition effects, xanthine oxidase inhibition, nitric oxide synthesis. Antioxidative activities were measured by using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity. DPPH radical scavenging activity of Omija hot water extract was increased in a dose-dependent manner and was about 49%. The inhibitory activity of Omija hot water extract on α-glucosidase was determined to be 86.2%. The xanthine oxidase inhibition activities were inhibited about 70.1% at 2 mg/ml of Omija hot water extract. Nitrite scavenging activity, which was measured at various pH conditions (1.2, 3.0, 6.0), was about 54.9%, 42.4%, and 34.2%, respectively. These results revealed that Omija hot water extract has a strong antioxidative and α-glucosidase and exhibits, and xanthine oxidase inhibition activity.
