A supply of quality service by a library requires an analysis of the needs of users for information and their pattern of using the library. A school library is no exception. Teacher-librarians are responsible for keeping track of the basic needs of students and teachers for information and their favorite service to provide materials in response to their needs.
The purpose of this study was to examine the library-using patterns among vocational high school students and teachers, who were users of a school library, and their needs for information. As for students, their using pattern and needs were checked according to their future career plan, namely whether they wanted to find a job or go to college. Teachers were classified into two groups according to the subjects they taught. One group taught vocational subjects, and the other was in charge of humanities. And then the using patterns and needs of the two groups were investigated.
The subjects in this study were the students and teachers in five selected vocational high schools. Out of the five, four were located in Seoul, and one was selected from Incheon. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the vocational high school students investigated used the school libraries most often to read books or to satisfy their interest. They viewed the school libraries as spaces of culture and leisure rather than places of teaching-learning. Concerning the roles of the school libraries, there was a tendency for them to see the libraries as places where students and teachers read materials.
As for needs for information, they mainly had an interest in materials about leisure and their interested fields, and they asked for materials related to college admission, employment and vocational subjects. But they scarcely called for materials on humanities. As for favorite library service, they hoped to be provided with information service on college admission, career, hobbies or interested fields. They wanted to be informed about materials owned by the libraries and to be helped to make an informed choice. They showed little interest in educational library service like reading guidance, reading therapy or reading counseling.
Second, the vocational high school teachers perceived that the role of the school libraries was to provide information on teaching-learning. The teachers who taught humanities made more frequent use of the libraries than those in charge of vocational subjects, but the former had a tendency to read books to satisfy their personal interest. On the contrary, the teachers in charge of vocational subjects used the libraries less often but primarily to find teaching-learning materials. The vocational high school teachers wanted the libraries to have plenty of books on technology and science, which seemed to have something to do with the educational object of the vocational high schools. Their needs for materials might be contingent on each school's specialty.
As for their needs for information, they called for materials on vocational subjects, humanities, leisure and interested fields, and each of the teachers gave top priority to materials on his or her own subjects. As a result of asking a question what kind of materials they thought the vocational high schools should possess without considering their own needs, the teachers in charge of vocational subjects gave more weight to materials on vocational subjects, employment and career, and those who taught humanities put more emphasis on materials on college admission, employment, career, leisure and interested fields rather than materials related to instruction in general. Regarding a question which kind of library service students would be in want of, they placed importance on educational service such as reading education and information literary education. When they were asked a question what service would be needed by themselves, they wanted to be informed about materials on leisure and interested fields to make an informed choice.
Third, the students replied that they would use the libraries more often if they were provided with more materials tailored to their needs, and they asked the libraries to hold a particular event. Like the students, the teachers thought that in order to dynamize the school libraries, the preparation of collections of books tailored to user needs and successful marketing and P.R. efforts would encourage students and teachers to make more use of the libraries.
An accurate analysis of the needs of vocational high school teachers and students for information and a supply of the right information and service at the right time are expected to raise user satisfaction and vitalize school libraries. And teacher-librarians, school principals and other teachers should make concerted efforts to step up the gradual and sustainable development of school libraries, which will contribute, in turn, to the sustainable development of vocational education.
