This study is to confirm the effect of group art therapy on the self-esteem and the peer relationship of low-income children. The study subject was 5 low-income children, who were 5th or 6th grade elementary school students in B, C Community Children's Center located in P city. They had a difficulty in peer relationship in the two Community Children's Center and agreed to participate in this program. For them, this group art therapy program was carried out during 12 sessions for 80 minutes per session twice a week from October 27, 2009 to December 4, 2009. The measurement scale was the self-esteem scale(Kwon, Young Mi, 1999) and the peer relationship scale(Park, In Suk, 2008), which were carried out before and after this program. Nonparametric test was carried out to confirm the effectiveness of this program. And the difference in the score of pretest and post test was analyzed by Wilcoxon's signed ranks test. The content analysis was carried out for the changes in the pictures in KHTP(Kinetic House-Tree-Person) and for the changes in the children's behavior by steps of this program The results are as follows. Firstly, this group art therapy had a positive effect on the improvement of social self-esteem of low-income children. The scores of all the five group members were increased in the questionnaire survey. In view of KHTP test, the brush pressure was snapped, weak and the picture was small before this program was carried out. And shadow was painted on a part of the picture. However, after this program, the brush pressure became distinct, and the picture size grew bigger. And they played and painted a picture with someone else. It means that their sense of self-esteem was improved. In behavior observation, their face was dark and they expressed themselves negatively. And they made light of their own works. However, as this program went on, their face lighted up, and they expressed themselves positively. And they participated in this program actively, and their satisfaction degree on their works was heightened. Secondly, this group art therapy had a positive effect on the whole peer relationship and the social support of low-income children. The scores of all the five group members were increased. In view of behavior observation, in earlier time of this program, they used negative language and competed with each other. However, as this program went on, they became familiar with a skill for positive peer relationship by way of natural feedbacking activities and praises and encouragement between themselves. Consequently, the frequency of using negative language was reduced. and they experienced a successful peer relationship. In conclusion, it is certain that this group art therapy program had a positive effect on the sense of self-esteem and the peer relationship of low-income children. This study has a significant meaning in that it provides the children with low self-esteem and negative peer relationship in Community Children's Center for the self-image's change from negative to positive and for a experience of successful peer relationship, and furthermore in that it confirms the effectiveness of this group art therapy for the low-income children. However, as the subject was 5 low-income children in P city, it is not easy to generalize the results of this study. And as this study was carried out by single group design, it is necessary to carry out the same group art therapy program by comparison group design in further studies. And then the effectiveness of this art therapy program will be identified more explicitly.
