The purpose of this study is to provide the basic material for a new and improved dance education textbook by analyzing the elementary school textbooks on dance education, identifying the problems of the current status of dance education, and seeking ways to resolve them. To this end, the following research tasks were established: 1) To identify changes in the dance education and its policy 2) To identify contents of dance education in school textbooks. 3) To distinguish teachers’ recognition on dance education in elementary school and analyze current status of dance education. 4) To discover the problems in the current dance education in elementary school and thus seek ways for improvement The results of the research tasks are the following: 1. Dance education in elementary schools, from the first educational curriculum to the seventh educational curriculum, is established as an expressive activity using one’s body within the physical education curriculum, aiming at physical, emotional, and social development. Along with the changes in the education policy, from the first educational curriculum to the seventh, dance education has also reflected changes of the times and new educational values. In this way it has evolved as a means to develop creativity which in turn aims to promote self-directed learning capability. 2. Dance education in textbooks is included in physical education curriculum. Dance education, termed an “expressive activity,” is composed of activities expressing movement, rhythm, folk culture, and thematic expression activities. Each activity is based on learning movement, developing movement skills, expressing, and appreciating. Classes are arranged sequentially from understanding the principles and procedures, learning how to express, performing and appreciating, to conceptual application of activity appreciation. 3. In order to identify the status of dance education and to draw out improvement measures, a survey of elementary school teachers was conducted on eight areas: general attitude on dance education, the aim of dance education, the current situation of dance education, utilization of textbooks and guidance books, school facilities and teaching aids, the teaching method of teachers, the need for teachers dedicated to dance education, and ways to improve dance education. The differences in the results in terms of gender (male teachers vs. female teachers), grades in charge (grades 1-3 vs. grades 4-6), and dance training experience (whether teachers had dance training opportunity) were statistically tested by usingχ2 test . The results are as follows: Most elementary school teachers currently recognize that dance education is not implemented well although it is a necessary condition for elementary school students. About 50% of those surveyed said that the goal of dance education is holistic education, and that they determine the content based on the standards of school curriculum. Also, it was revealed that in reality, dance education has not been implemented on a regular basis as the teachers were often overloaded with taking charge of expressive activities of the textbook and at the same time preparing for programs of various school events. As the conditions to maximize utilization of textbooks, the teachers were found to attach importance to the development of class material and education programs, and to the need of change in the recognition of teachers. When asked what teaching aids and facilities are required for dance class, 40% of the respondents replied that separate dance rooms and halls are needed. About 49% of elementary school teachers replied they focused on performance during dance class. As the major content of dance education, 38% said that they focus on learning basic movement. About 44% said that the most difficult area to teach in dance class is dance art (Korean dance, ballet, and modern dance). When asked whether it is necessary to have teachers dedicated for dance education, 50% answered yes, and 40% said no. As for what must be included in the dance curriculum, about 60% said learning movement, 50% said expressing themes, and 40% replied Korean folk dance. Regarding the questions of why dance education is not active at school, 28% mentioned difficulties in applying the curriculum in class, and 26% replied that the teachers avoid it because dance education is burdensome. Regarding ways to improve dance education at school, about 32% mentioned that various education programs must be developed. 4. In order to activate dance education in elementary school, the following is required: First, the recognition of teachers on dance education must be positively changed. Second, various material that can be utilized for dance education must be developed, and teachers should be provided with a variety of training opportunities so that they can enhance confidence in dance education. In order to identify gifted students in dance and to promote development of dance, there should be opportunities for students to com e in contact with dance arts since elementary school days. In this regard, the content of dance education needs be accessed easily so that it can be an enjoyable experience for the elementary school students. At the same time, various methods must be sought in order to inherit and develop Korean culture. Furthermore, not only dance rooms and halls but also dance music and equipments appropriate for elementary school students must be provided. Most of all, teachers fully in charge of dance education need to be employed, and training sessions should be provided to teachers on order to enhance their professionalism. Although there are problems with elementary school education in terms of institution and curriculum, along with a lack of professional human resources, learning model and teaching plan, there is adequate recognition on the values and need of dance education.
