This study is mainly intended to understand multicultural youth and examine the process of their adaptation to school life by experiencing multicultural youth’s school life. Accordingly, focusing on the fact that multicultural youth’s school life is closely related to their characteristics and adaption to school life, this study tried to examine those features. Therefore, this study aims to understand personal experience and subjective awareness which multicultural youth may experience while they adapt to school life and find out related meanings, ultimately for the purpose of seeking out political and practical alternatives to help multicultural youth adjust to school life well. To this end, three major issues were raised and examined: Firstly, what do multicultural youth experience in their school life and what does the experience means? Secondly, to multicultural youth, what is the concept of adaption to school life and how do they adjust to school life? Thirdly, what are multicultural youth’s strong points and resources and what's the meaning of those strong points and resources to multicultural youth? In this study, 13 ~ 18 aged middle or high school students who are a member of multicultural family where a father or a mother is a foreigner and capable of talking about their experience coherently were selected. Five selected multicultural students are 13 ~ 16 years old and live in urban-rural complex cities, rural areas and urban areas. In addition, their mothers are foreigners who came from Japan, Argentina, Mongolia and Philippines and got married with a Korean man. Since the study focuses mainly on examining how multicultural youth adjust to their school life, narrative research was used. In this study, narrative refers to multicultural youth’s overall experience involved in adjusting to school life, that is, each story of their experience makes up narrative. With their stories, this study tried to find out not only each multicultural student’s school life but also related philosophy and trust. Study results of three issues in the above were analyzed as follows: Firstly, multicultural youth’s awareness of school life was examined in terms of spatial context and relational context. As for spatial context, they thought of their life in the school as learning, rest time and lunch time and consider the ‘school’ as a restricted area. They also regarded their life in the school as extension of their school. As for relational context, three relationships related to their school life such as relationship with peers, teachers and parents were separately examined. The subjects had a favorable relationship with their peers, teachers and parents unlike the previous research result that their relationships with peers, teachers and parents were not favorable. Secondly, multicultural youth saw adjustment to their school life as getting along with their peers. In conclusion, it was proved through narrative that they adapted to their school life well. Last but not least, one of the most remarkable multicultural youth’s characteristics through narrative of school life experience was awareness of imaginary social identity. They suffered from their identity characterized as multicultural youth, or awareness of ‘multi-culture’. In addition, they regarded themselves not as half but as double with advantages and resources. Based on the above results, it was found that multicultural youth’s problems revealed from previous studies are the same as other students’ problems. It is generally thought that multicultural youth’s problems are caused by their unique situations in multicultural family instead of diverse difficulties which most students experience. Not only symbolic meaning of ‘multi-culture’ named in a social structure but also unreasonable policies and problems based on negative awareness of multi-culture drove multicultural youth to difficulty situations. Therefore, this study suggests that we should admit multicultural youth’s difference and understand diversity rather than classify them as a ‘different’ group and discriminate them.
