The aim of this study is to develop a class for listening to music which ARCS motivational strategies were applied to, and to investigate into how it influences on elementary students by applying it to a class of the fifth grade in an elementary school. For doing so, I inquired into learning-motives, ARCS motivational strategies, a listening-to-music class in an elementary school, and what self-efficacy means, and developed a final strategy to stimulate students to concentrate on the listening-to-music class through a process of mapping-out a motive for the fifth grade students in Y elementary school. On this basis, I developed a class, composed of 13 units, which is a combination of a teaching plan for the listening-to-music class to which ARCS motivational strategies were applied and a project of listening-to-music activities, and built the surroundings for a online community to connect the listening class to follow-up classes in relation to listening to music. First of all, I performed a preliminary test to 26 students in the fifth grade in Y elementary school located in Incheon, applied the 13 unites of a listening-to-music class to which ARCS motivational strategies were applied, and effected a post test. To verify the effects of the program, I carried out T-Verification and analyzed changes quantitatively in the musical self-efficacy; to supplement the quantitative analysis, I analyzed a portfolio of students such as a record of class, home-study materials, and mutual evaluation of pupils. Out of such analyses, what I could draw as conclusions are as follows: First, the result of analyses of the musical self-efficacy of students revealed that the listening-to-music class to which ARCS motivational strategies were applied seems to be effective factors, in which the numerical value of the musical self-efficacy is usually low, particularly in self-confidence (t=5.82), self-regulatory efficacy (t=5.38), and preference for the level of difficulty of assignment (t=3.45). Second, the result of the comparisons and analyses of how self-efficacy is improved by sex indicated that the listening-music-class is efficient in both male (t=6.70) and female (t=4.56) students and that it is more effective to male students than to female students. An analysis of subcategories by sex disclosed that it is proficient both in male and female students; yet, in the category of self-confidence, it is productive only to male students (t=3.00). Third, an analysis of how much self-efficacy according to the higher scored group and the lower scored was improved on the whole in the preliminary test of the musical self-efficacy proved that the listening-to-music class is efficient to both statistically. An analysis of the subcategories revealed that in case of the students belonged to a higher scored group (t=1.97, no significance) it is insufficient only in the category of self-confidence. Fourth, the listening-to-music class to which ARCS motivational strategies were applied to improved the musical self-confidence of students to some degree and changed them in to active participants in the class. The music class, supplemented by the strategies for motivation such as providing them with a variety of educational materials, composing the class in accordance with the needs and interests of students, and reorganized various activities, etc., improved students’ confidence not only about musical concepts but also about numerous ways of expressing and making public what they think about music. Fifth, the listening-to-music class to which ARCS motivational strategies were applied improved students’ ability to use the self-regulation mechanism and a sense of challenging. In anticipation of making a success students repeated a reflective way of thinking by making use of self-observation, self-judgment and self-regulation mechanism for self-shaping; in such a process, students improved themselves altogether through cooperating to solve project. In addition, on the basis of the musical understanding students learned from listening to a piece of music, they came to challenge to appreciate a new piece of music; and furthermore, they utilized them in their real life and therefore came to make listening to music a way of life. Likewise, the listening-to-music class to which ARCS Motivational Strategies were applied, influenced the musical self-efficacy of students by stimulating the learning and achieving motives of students. Also, it was influential in a positive sense to the spirit of team work, the ability to appreciate music and the attitude to it, and their making listening to music a part of their life. Accordingly, it is arguable that the listening-to-music to which ARCS Motivational Strategies were applie disefficient to the improvement of the musical self-efficacy of elementary students.
