This study is to provide basic research materials to improve the domestic cosmetic pruducts market and marketing strategies of cosmetic products companies looking towards female high school students, as potential consumers in the cosmetics market, realities of using cosmetics according to celebrity models, models and advertisement, and acknowledgement of brands. For this study, 36 questionnaires were used to investigate the realities of using cosmetic products and buying behaviors, models and advertisement of cosmetics, acknowledgment of brands which were targeted to female high school students who live in Seoul metropolitan area. 560 copies of questionnaires were sent out and 530 copies of the questionnaires were collected, among them, 506 copies were used for final analysis materials excluding the insincere or incomplete 24 copies. For the analysis data, SPSS ver. 18.0 program was used. Frequency analysis and Crosstabs, and independent t-test and Pearson's correlation analysis were carried out. The results of analysis of this study are as follows: First, female high school students have been examined on their use of cosmetic products. It was shown in the examination that most female high school students are generally using the most standard or basic types of cosmetic products, and 27.3% of these students began using basic cosmetics during elementary school. 51.6% of these students have claimed that the reason for using these types of cosmetics was in order to moisturize dry skin conditions. In terms of frequency of use; 93.1% of female high school students claimed that they used lotion most out of all other cosmetics, where 4.84 was the average number of different cosmetic products which they used. In terms of purchasing patterns of basic cosmetic products; 49.8% chose their products based on compatibility with their skin, and of all the cosmetic products which they used; 44.5% of these products were some type of moisturizer. The examination has shown that there is a general consensus among high school girls, that moisturizing dry skin is the most important reason for using cosmetic products. Second, the average satisfaction level of high school girls when using standard cosmetics has shown to be 3.62, which is above the average satisfaction level of cosmetic users in general. These numbers being quite high, it is possible to speculate that there is a direct relationship between the number of cosmetic products used, to the satisfaction level. To deny such speculations, the number of cosmetic products used have been taken against the satisfaction level of high school girls, which resulted in r=0.079. By doing so, it was possible to conclude that the increase in the number of cosmetic products used does not correlate to an increase in satisfaction level. Third, purchasing patterns and statistics of high school girls have been examined. About 59.9% of high school girls purchase their own basic cosmetics. The method of purchase (either through personal purchasing of cosmetics or having someone else purchase cosmetics for them), have proven to be of very little importance in this particular examination. 47% of standard cosmetic purchases have been expressed to have come from specialty shops, and 43.5% of those who purchase at specialty shops have claimed that the reason for purchasing cosmetics at these locations is because of convenience and simplicity. In terms of purchasing amounts; 25.1% have shown to spend less than about 10,000 to 20,000 won, on average per month. Of these students, 55.1% received funding for cosmetics purchases by asking their parents, and 32.8% of them received information related to cosmetics by word-of-mouth through friends. Fourth, the effectiveness of models in advertisements was examined. The result of this examination has shown that high school girls felt the impulse to purchase advertised cosmetics on an average of 2.81, and cosmetics on its own does not provide significant impulse drives. Female high school students could identify with celebrity models on an average of 2.41, which proved to be an insignificant factor in developing impulse drives to consumers. However, when examining the correlation of impulse drives felt when consumers were able to identify with celebrities, the results were r=0.664(0.000) which showed a significantly high level of correlation. Fifth, the recollection of female celebrity models in advertisements was examined. 53% of high school girls replied that they were able to remember specific models, and 23.2% of these students stated that they remembered the celebrity Go Hyun Jung the most. For male celebrities, 57.8% of students replied that they were unable to recollect anyone, and have claimed that they could remember less male celebrities than female celebrities. Of the students that were surveyed, Song Joong Ki was the mostly remembered male celebrity. Skin Food was the mostly recognized cosmetics company, and the models which female students identified most with and have claimed to be most ideal were Go Hyun Jung, Song Jung Gi, and female idol IU, and male idol Lee Seung Ki. The reason they were able to recollect these specific celebrities was because they were celebrities which they personally liked. Sixth, brand recognition and popularity was examined. 44.5% of high school girls have stated that well-known brand standards are set by excellence in the quality of the cosmetic products. 54.7% of students have recognized that well-known brands provide a sense of reliability. 37.5% of high school girls use Skin Food cosmetics the most. They have stated that their current cosmetic products were mostly from the Skin Food cosmetics company, and that cosmetics advertisements most remembered were also from this company. 43.7% of students surveyed have shown knowledge on whether their current cosmetics products were foreign or locally manufactured, and 25.5% believed that imported and domestic cosmetic products were similar in terms of quality. These students have also expressed the importance of improving the quality of domestic cosmetics. Seventh, the preferences of high school girls on different celebrity models in advertisements for the same cosmetic products have been examined. 29.2% have expressed a preference for domestic celebrities over foreign celebrities, and have stated that their selections were based on the models excellence and their attraction to the celebrities. It was possible to conclude that even though the products were the same, the celebrity model could have an effect on their purchasing patterns. According to the above results, it is possible to conclude that the use of cosmetic products is not limited to adults. Nowadays, not only youth, but also male consumers have prevailed in having a profound impact on the cosmetics market. Therefore, there is a need to find a way to provide, not only new female high school consumers, but all youth in general, with correct cosmetic information and the ability to reasonably select the right types of cosmetics. It is also possible to conclude that there is a need to develop marketing and advertising strategies that can satisfy the five senses and emotions of female high school students.
