Since the discovery of gold, mankind has utilized gold for various purposes. For thousands of years, gold has been used for decoration symbolizing various meanings, besides the main role as the key currency. In this study, the past techniques of gold used in paintings have been surveyed and the meanings of gold also have been considered by looking into the examples of previous Korean paintings in which gold were used. The purposes of this study are to succeed and improve the previous techniques of gold, to look back on the role of gold as a painting material, and to find and analyze how the potential of gold in the paintings can be expressed in various aspects. For these purposes, the characteristics of gold in the material aspect, the symbolic meanings, and the method of making gold leaves and particles have been considered. Gold is a special metal that has been used in paintings, which has been sometimes for the case of silver. From ancient times, several methods of making gold as leaves and particles suitable for painting materials have been developed. It was because of the highest ductility and malleability, which are the abilities of solid metal to deform under tensile and compressive stress respectively, as well as the high reflectivity and the extreme resistance to corrosion. In this study, the characteristics of gold particles and gold leaves used in the previous Korean paintings have been described and the examples were shown too. The painting techniques of gold particles used in Buddhist paintings of Goryeo dynasty and Buddhist paintings, landscape paintings, the Four Gracious paintings and the Court Paintings of Joseon Dynasty have been surveyed. Also, the gold techniques used in the murals of Goguryeo tombs were examined and the painting techniques, which utilize both gold particles and gold leaves, used in the portraits of the kings of Joseon Dynasty have been described in historical order. The meanings and background of the usage of gold were also considered and the detailed techniques have been explained with magnified forms of the paintings. Detailed techniques applied to the previous paintings have been studied. The processes of Myo-Geum(描金) method which are shown in previous Korean, Chinese and Japanese paintings in common and Kingindesrie(金銀泥摺繪) which have been mainly used in Japanese paintings were described and contemporary painting works using gold particle techniques were also considered. One of the new attempts in this study is the succession and application of the Buddhist paintings of the Goryeo Dynasty and the Landscape paintings of the Joseon Dynasty. The gold particle techniques used in the works have been divided into two parts, Sun-myo(線描) and Boon-myo(分染), and the characteristics were depicted. The painting processes and specific examples of various techniques using gold leaf such as Geum-Il(金一) method, Yip-Boon(立粉), Bal-Geum(拨金), Cho-Geum(雕金), Jeol-Geum(切金), Jeol-Bak(切箔) and Snago(砂子) method have been described and modern paintings adopting gold leaf techniques were also shown as examples. Lastly, the Hommages of the famous Buddhist paintings, and have been attempted utilizing one of the previous gold leaf techniques, Bok-Bak(伏箔) method. Also, the Yip-Boon method were applied to the new attempts modifying the Real Landscape Paintings of Jung-Sun(鄭敾), who is a famous artist in Joseon Dynasty. The gold leaf techniques and painting processes have been explained in detail to suggest a variety of painting techniques with gold and variegate the visual expression in modern Korean paintings. The methods of Bok-Bak(伏箔), Chup-Geum(貼金), Boo-Bak(腐箔) and Ma-Geum(磨金) and their applications have been described with some samples showing the possibilities of plentiful visual expressions. The Bok-Bak method is a method of pasting gold leaves on the backside of the silk to shimmer through the silk screen, the Chup-Geum is gilding gold leaves on the three-dimensional paper surfaces, the Boo-Bak is a method to reveal the gold leaves beneath the copper leaves by artificial corrosion of copper with ammonia water, and the Ma-Geum is a method of reveal the colors beneath the gold leaves by scraping the surfaces of gold leaves. In this study, mixed use of the above gold leaf techniques and Chinese ink were also applied to some painting works as a new attempt. While gold is shiny but the Chinese ink is calm, they have a same meaning or feeling of eternity in common. Therefore, the control of the brilliance of gold by using the Chinese ink has been tried to deepen the traditional techniques for win-win expression of painting materials harmonizing the gold and black ink. Hopefully, this study on the characteristics and application of gold as a painting material would give a meaningful opportunity to expand the boundaries of modern Korean painting techniques.
