Cosmeceutical market has increased steadily in recent five years with 20% or more a year. Cosmeceutical combined with whitening and anti-wrinkle etc grew 85.7 percent growth over last year. Cosmetics is no longer just for the cleanliness or beauty of the human body. It means that there has been increasing preference for highly functional anti-aging cosmetics such as skin whitening and anti-wrinkle. Interest in healthy natural, organic cosmetic is rising along with the expansion of the well-being trend, whereas the reluctance to chemicals is reduced. Therefore, the development of fuctional cosmetics made of organic or natural material will be more active on the basis of the safety and efficacy of cosmetic. Since olive leaf (Olea europaea L.) contained harmoniously the hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, caffeic acid and oleuropein which are called "super polyphenols“, it can be considered as the best balanced polyphenol complexes. Particularly, in previous studies, olive leaf extract was shown to have excellent antioxidant activity when compared to other 20 species of medicinal plants and 10 species of medicinal mushrooms. As cell damage induced by UV was reduced with the treatment of olive leaf extract, the ability of cell viability was observed. When we conducted the melanogenesis inhibition experiment in treating olive leaf fractions after inducing melanogenesis, it showed the possibility of some whitening effect. In this study, we have tried to prove that olive leaf extracts have the activities of the whitening and anti-wrinkle by conducting additional experiments. First, we confirmed the previous effect of olive leaf fractions on the antioxidant activity as shown in DPPH radical scavenging assays. Both 80% ethanol and ethyl acetate fractions of olive leaf showed similar activity, even reported whitening ingredient, arbutin was lower than the olive leaf extract of the DPPH radical scavenging activity. For whitening activity, both of olive leaf fractions showed tyrosinase inhibitory activity and inhibition in melanin production. Both of olive leaf fractions were the more effective in inhibiting melanin production than arbutin, and olive leaf ethyl acetate fractions more strongly inhibited tyrosinase activity than arbutin. We found that both of olive leaf fractions have the whitening activities. For anti-wrinkle activity, we examined the collagenase inhibitory activity which degrades collagen and the elastase inhibitory activity which degrades elastin. Both of olive leaf fractions reduced collagenase and elastase in a concentration-dependent manner. In particular, both of olive leaf fractions appeared to have much higher elastase inhibition activity than previously reported whitening ingredient such as arbutin or ascorbic acid. Therefore, olive leaf fractions showed the potential as functional and any other more differentiated materials. From these results, olive leaf extracts will be useful as new natural source of functional cosmetics which are possible as combining cosmeceuticals of whitening and anti-wrinkle.
