This thesis is to pursue a study on the tactics of the modern Korean novels, focused on Seong, Seok-Je(성석제) and Cheon, Myoung-kwan(천명관) who drew the Pre-modern 'stories' into their novels. Both Seong, Seok-Je and Cheon, Myoung-kwan don't lock themselves up in the Western novel standards, bringing out the meaning of narrativeness in earnest through the tactics of the narrative and inheriting the context of oral narrative tradition on which aesthetic consciousness is based. In this thesis, the discussion was continued aiming at 'character' and 'narrator' in the novels of Seong, Seok-Je and Cheon Myoung-kwan and the 'plot' of their novels.
The characters in the novel of Seong, Seok-Je and Cheon, Myoung-Kwan are the people from an old story or have something that a rational person disregarded or abandoned for establishing Capitalism. Seong, Seok-Je, picking up main characters from voluntary outsiders, focuses on embodying their attitude ethics according to their life style or values. Their outward immorality and inward ethics form paradoxical irony. On the other side, Cheon, Myoung-kwan, picking up main characters from the peripheries of the society, put emphasis on embodying women's spirituality and narrative aboriginality, mythicizing and making them narrative.
The key of the tactics of the narrative is the narrator, story-teller and its' oral effective. Gathering and preserving popular language through the voice of many narrators, Seong, Seok-je enlarges the space of the novel and gains maximizing effect of the reality in lives. On the contrary, embracing the present, past and future with a single narrator and demonstrating omniscience, Cheon, Myoung-kwan devotes to making the world of the novel a narrative world through expanding the time of the novel infinitively.
The igniting creativity of a narrative by a story-teller rather makes a special exchange with the reader at the moment than proposes a new story. As Seong, Seok-je and Cheon, Myoung-kwan revive the story-teller and arrange a storyboard they make different characteristics of the community in their novels. The story-teller of Seong, Seok-je narrates a story in an agricultural community and makes 'experience community' that the reader and the story-teller have same experiences and feelings. Through this 'experience community', the reader gains the wisdom of the times that provokes authenticity to live. On the other hand, the story-teller of Cheon, Myoung-kwan's Go-rae, Whale narrates in a narrative space and forms 'we', that is to say a 'story community' as a being that shares the story between the story-teller and the readers. The 'story community' replaces the apparent and rooted modern history with minority history of main characters in Go-rae, Whale.
The world of words is intrinsically arbitrary and improvisatory even though the structure is the virtue of modern novels. The novels of Seong, Seok-je and Cheon, Myoung-kwan are made up of narration by introducing the attribute of conversation that 'a story' has. Seong, Seok-je borrows the form of 'Jeon'(conveyance, 傳) and 'Hang-jang'(annals, 行狀) and popular composition of romantic novels. Seong, Seok-je reveals conventionality of the life and love and secular reality. Meanwhile, Cheon, Myoung-kwan's Go-rae shows a form of composition, three generations which are connected to No-pa, Geum-Bok, Chun-Hee and the writer makes a supernatural and unrealistic world, borrowing fantasy and various grammar of popular genre in there.
The novels of Seong, Seok-je and Cheon, Myoung-kwan draw 'stories' but they are connected with the genre, 'novel' not 'story'. 'The traditional story-teller' who is revived in these 'novels' is not the happy previous narrator. Seong, Seok-je tries to reenact the voice that has lost by the word and the oral tradition, on one side, the eyes of denying and mocking his desire to narrate are also immanent. On the contrary, the narrator of Cheon, Myoung-kwan honestly expresses the solitude, loneliness of the modern story-teller and self consciousness.
Through a serious of discussion as above, the trial to connect with modern 'novel' establishes an opportunity to extend the genre, 'novel' flexibly and also shows the possibility to make a breakthrough in the problems of our novels that are confronting a lack and dearth of narrative.
