The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident of Japan in 2011 on consumer's perception for irradiated foods and radioactive-contaminated foods. The subjects in this study were 412 parents of middle school students in the region of Gwanak-gu, Seoul, on whom a survey was conducted to gather data from April 2 to 9, 2012. As a result, it's found that 55.1 percent of the respondents were cognizant of the Japanese nuclear power plant accident, and they felt a lot of anxiety about the possibility that radioactive contaminants might be mixed with other food(52%). They worried that marine products might be most vulnerable to this possibility(53.1%), and acquired information mainly through the TV or radio about radioactive-contaminated food(45.8%). Those who were more aware of the hazard of radioactive contaminants were most anxious about the possible use of contaminants, and there were significant differences according to age and academic credential in discrimination between irradiated food and radioactive-contaminated food. As a result of asking what information they wanted to acquire in relation to irradiated food, they asked for information on safety inspection in general. They weren't well cognizant of irradiated food, and many confused that with radioactive contaminated food. The consumers who were better aware of irradiated food were better cognizant of the hazard of radioactive contaminated food, and it seemed because they didn't have an accurate understanding of irradiated food and confused it with radioactive contaminated food. The findings of the study indicated that the Japanese nuclear power plant accident exerted an influence on the awareness of the consumers about irradiated food and radioactive-contaminated food. Therefore full-fledged publicity and education are required to improve the awareness and understanding of consumers about irradiated food and the differences between it and radioactive-contaminated food.
