Interior designs in restaurants and entailing restaurant images not only trigger customer visits and purchase behavior, but also serve the main factors of customer satisfaction. They can be the basis of maintaining constant and repeated purchase behavior. Knowing emotional images with which customers have empathy and interior designs they prefer according to types of interior designs in restaurants will be critical in management decision-making, and will be helpful for establishing a strategy of interior designs fitting customers' preference type. The purpose of this work is to use Q Methodology based on heuristic reasoning of hypotheses, not deduction of them, to investigate customers' emotional preference types of interior designs that are one of customers' restaurant choice attributes and to suggest the directions of interior designs in restaurants. To achieve the purpose, this work surveyed domestic restaurants reflecting the latest trend, and Q samplings. Based on the previous studies, this work chose representative 14 kinds of emotional language, and with the help of design experts, selected highly representative 26 Q samples and P sample (24 persons) who experienced restaurants in order to perform self-reference classification of Q samples. The classification results were analyzed by QUANL program for PC that is used for Q-factor-analysis. And this researcher examined the reasons for preference and non-preference filled in a questionnaire, performed theoretical investigation, and looked into pre-survey results from each Q sample. This work found that there were four types of preference for interior designs in restaurants. The results are summarized as follows: The first type is the 'traditionalist who prefers an antique atmosphere.' The customers of the type prefer tradition, an antique atmosphere, an elegant and graceful atmosphere, but do not prefer a modern atmosphere, and a bright, casual, and light atmosphere (clean, fresh and pacific). The second type is the 'pacifist who prefers an elegant atmosphere'. The customers of the type prefer an elegant atmosphere with bright and natural senses, but do not prefer a splendid and heavy atmosphere, and a modern and serious atmosphere. The third type is the 'naturalist who prefers a pure and natural atmosphere'. The customers of the type prefer a natural atmosphere created with the use of bright woods, and a pure atmosphere where physical properties of materials appear as they are in some ways like cementing. But, they do not prefer an graceful atmosphere created with the use of decorative and splendid colors. That is because they think that such decoration is unnatural and artificial. The fourth type is the 'progressive' who prefers a clean and fresh atmosphere.' The customers of the type prefer a classical yet bright atmosphere without too much decorative factors. But, they do not prefer a serious, though modern, atmosphere with dark colors and lighting a too much classical atmosphere, and a retro-type, heavy and regressive atmosphere. On the basis of the discussions and understanding of the self-schemata (which refers to the ways human beings present the world or their internal psychological structure) of restaurant-choice-behavior according to customers' types, it is considered that suggestions about interior designs in restaurants are drawn as follows: First, to perform interior designs in the restaurants that the consumers of the first type prefer, it is important to plan the space in the way that the space provides a sense of independence, and put the chairs and sofas that have comfort and elegant images. In addition, changing lighting over tables and intensity of illumination on passageways, and putting lighting devices conveying a sense of warmness, such as pendants, halogen spot bulbs, and candles, on and over tables, will provide more privacy. As for finishing materials, it will be better to use old bricks, and wood floors with a middle and lower color tone. Secondly, in the case of the consumers of the second type, it will be better to apply natural colors (e.g., green, brown) and, at the same time, use finishing materials like cement and exposed concrete that convey neutral and natural feelings, and paint ceilings with white color. Lighting with middle-level illumination intensity together with natural lighting, and hanging white or ivory curtains will convey elegant and pacific feelings. In the formative aspect, a design with the beauty of curves, rather than straight lines will help to alleviate a sense of tension. Thirdly, in the case of the consumers of the third type, it will be better to use finishing materials that convey pure and natural feelings and show their physical properties, such as cement plater, exposed concrete, and cement blocks. Putting natural or artificial trees in restaurants helps to give such a feeling as nature comes inside. As for wood floors, it is good to use wood materials with a bright and middle color tone. As for colors, achromatic colors and natural colors are used as main colors, but when showy colors are used, point-colors are mainly applied. If there is a spatial margin, it will be good to build an open-air terrace and green space indoor. Such a design will convey more natural feelings. Fourthly, in the case of the consumers of the fourth type, it was found that they prefer a bright and semi-classical atmosphere, and a modern atmosphere with fresh and bright colors. Therefore, it will be better to use seamless large glass to secure lighting and create an image of opened space. Also, it will be good to use the colors and finishing materials that convey fresh feelings and to make unique and characteristic display, instead of placing unnecessary props. As for tables and chairs, it will be good to use woods with bright or casual colors, or apply tablecloths.
