The newly visually impaired means the people who were visually impaired by disease, heredity, accident, etc. while they were living with normal eyesight, unlike the innately blind. The newly visually impaired has difficulties in accepting the fact they are the blind after suffering from the disability as they lived as people without disabilities in the past. And, they experience more difficulties in life adaptation because of the sudden loss of physical function. Researches related to the disability acceptance of the postnatal disabled have been mainly conducted by focusing on individual characteristics such as demographic sociology characteristics, disability related characteristics and self-esteem until now. However, as environmental factors are recently included to the concept of disability, the insistence that the concept of disability acceptance is influenced by individual experiences for same environment, such as response of family or society, more than the disability was recognized. In other words, social environments must be considered as responses to the disability neither occurs in only internal parts of the human body nor is isolate accident. Therefore, this research perceived disability acceptance as a complex result influenced by environmental effects beyond the simple inducement of their psychological changes and analyzed the effects. This research considered that self-esteem of individual factors and social support of environmental factors make an important effect on disability acceptance of the newly visually impaired through the examination of precedent researches. Thus, this research intends to emphasize the necessity to improve self-esteem and utilize actively environmental resources of the newly visually impaired during the rehabilitation for the improvement of disability acceptance and provide basic data necessary for practical technology or policy establishment which helps disability acceptance of the newly visually impaired. For the target of this research, the survey was conducted for 207 people among the newly visually impaired by disease or accident after 15 years of age. For the collected questionnaires, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, T-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted by SPSSWIN 19.0. And, main results of this research can be abstracted as follows. First, among the general characteristics of the newly visually impaired, self-esteem showed statistically significant differences by marital state, occupation and income, social support showed by age, marital state and existence of living together family and disability acceptance showed by marital state, occupation and income. Second, there was significant positive correlation among the self-esteem, social support and disability acceptance of the newly visually impaired. Third, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted after controlling general characteristics of the newly visually impaired. As the result, as the degree of disability was lower (approaching the sixth grade) and social support and self-esteem were higher, the degree of disability acceptance was high. Also, social support made more effects on disability acceptance than self-esteem. Therefore, to be helpful for disability acceptance of the the newly visually impaired, not only approach for the improvement of their self-esteem but also social support of families, relatives, neighbors and surrounding people must be provided. Based on the above results of research, this researcher intends to suggest following measures of practical intervention so as to be helpful for disability acceptance of the newly visually impaired. First, it's necessary to fulfill empowerment programs such as education improving the perception of visual handicap, mentoring support of families of the newly visually impaired, etc. for their families and surrounding people who directly and indirectly provide social support to the newly visually impaired. Second, it's necessary to cultivate peer counsellors and vitalize activity programs so as to strengthen social support of surrounding people for the newly visually impaired. In addition, it's necessary to fulfill rehabilitation consulting education for workers in institutions related to impaired persons welfare, university students and regional residents in relative departments. Third, it's necessary to support continuously education and social rehabilitation programs which can improve their self-esteem and develop and introduce professional and systematic program related to counseling variously so as to be helpful for psychological and social adaptation of the newly visually impaired.
