South Korea and Japan are neighboring countries that culturally and economically exchange with each other throughout history. Although Korea had once been under the Japanese imperial rulings, exchange of the two countries is really active from trade and hallyu, known as the Korean wave. This study focuses on the otaku phenomenon shown in the two countries. Otaku, which has been used in since the 1980s, refers to those who are immersed in certain things. They run the gamut from manga, anime, video games and sci-fi movies to trains, guns and computers. In this study, how the concept of ‘otaku’ is introduced in South Korea and changed by South Koreans, and how different otaku in South Korea is different from that of Japan. By doing so, this study seeks to frame otaku in Koreans’ perspectives. In addition, it also seeks to offer insights into how differently South Koreans and Japanese use digital content on the Internet. The meaning of otaku is almost the same in the two countries. Otaku indicates those who are so much immersed in a certain thing that they are sometimes cut off from the world. However, there is a subtle difference in the meaning of otaku in Japan and South Korea. In Japan’s case, otaku refers to people with obsessive interests in various things. In contrast, otaku refers only to people interested in manga, Japanese video games and so on. Such a difference in meaning comes from South Koreans’ perceptions about otaku. In both countries, people have negative perceptions about otaku. Yet the reason that they have such negative perceptions seems different. In Japan, the masses began to aware of otaku from a heinous murder case committed by a person considered to be otaku, and they have had perceptions about them since them. In Korea, the masses had somewhat positive perceptions about them because the term was introduced from Japanese books and they framed otaku as semi-professionals, who had bolstered Japan’s economic rise. South Koreans, however, started to be hostile toward them when the Korean mass media showed them as people who are only interested in anime, which especially have lovely girls as characters. Some of them sometimes were shown to have fallen love with these characters, and spoke Japanese as though they were characters in anime. This led South Koreans to be hostile toward otaku, regarding otaku are as people who are interested in anime and manga. In this process, the term otaku started to have different meaning to some extent in the two countries. In South Korea, the meaning of otaku is far limited, referring to only people who are interested in Japanese sub-culture. In fact, the use of otaku is also far limited for indicating these people. Moreover, otaku in South Korea are not obsessed with buying products compared with Japanese otaku. Rather, they tend to be obsessed with learning about what they are interested in. This originates in South Korean culture in general. In a country that fully embraces Confucianism, South Koreans are taught to not be obsessed with possessions. This stands in contrast to Japan, where people work hard to buy more and possess more. Such a cultural difference could influence otaku in the two countries. Furthermore, South Korean otaku are far younger than Japanese otaku, and the lion’s share of otaku in South Korea are females the creative industries. This perhaps because, Korean males have to go into the military in their 20s, which could hamper male otaku from being actively immersed in their interests. In addition, South Korean otaku can’t seem to do what they want to when they get old, because having interests in manga or anime is not viewed as adult. Some people say that female otaku outnumber male otaku in South Korea because of the times when the term was introduced. At the time, online activities were popular, and the feminist movement grew. In addition, South Koreans are generally far more hostile toward male otaku than female otaku, which keeps men in the creative industries from becoming otaku. This can get worse since a set of law on protecting children and teenagers from pornography was legislated. Moreover, unlike Japanese, South Korean otaku are likely to share their collectibles with others. This tendency is part of a broader South Korean culture, which are evident from anime to movies to music on the web. Some people say that this is because Koreans are not law-abiding citizens. Yet others argue that this is because there have been far limited routes for anime to enter the South Korean market, which is more compelling. Currently, there are many channels for anime to make it to the Korean market, which could lead to more people buying authentic anime items. The otaku phenomenon is becoming entrenched in Korean society as there have been more websites, and people have become more individualistic. This study serves advances in studies on South Korean otaku since Anime otaku, which is prevalent in South Korea, is explored in it. This study also helps people understand the differences in attitudes and perceptions to digital content among South Koreans and Japanese.
