Amid the flow of globalization that requires understanding of one's own national culture, the importance of teaching traditional music is getting increasingly emphasized. Folk songs are educationally very significant in that they, as a traditional music genre contained most in textbooks. constitutes a good material that helps students to learn the sentiments of the Korean people. The current education of folk songs, however, is only limitedly effective at leading students to feel the Korean people's unique sentiments, though it allows them to acquire musical knowledge. Therefore, this study aimed at helping students learn folk songs with understanding of a wide variety of areas, including the history, culture and life of the times when the songs were created, by integrating music and social studies curriculums. To this end, the researcher developed a folk song teaching and learning method that allows students to internalize Korean folk songs then examined the effect of the method by practicing it. The results of the study are summarized as follows. First, the researcher integrated music and social studies curriculums to assist students understand the social and cultural contexts of folk songs using Fogarty's sequenced model that allows students to learn the contents of relevant curriculums naturally in combination. In this process, the researcher analyzed folk songs in textbooks for sixth graders based on the content and usage then selected three theme units with regard to ‘work’, ‘nature’, and ‘play.’ After that, the researcher selected integration units by linking relevant social studies units and learning contents with the theme units. The theme unit ‘folk songs and work’ was linked with social studies unit ‘geography and our life,’ the theme unit ‘folk songs and nature’ with ‘human beings living along with nature,’ and the theme unit ‘folk songs and play’ with ‘the meeting of tradition and the world.’ Based on this, the three integration units, ‘our land, the working site’, ‘"communing with nature’, and ‘our play, to the world’ were selected. Second, the researcher selected content factors and activities to use in integrated lessons then developed a teaching and learning method and practiced it to sixth graders. After that, the researcher analyzed the results using various materials including daily record of lesson observation, study materials, outcomes of learning, self assessment report, group member assessment report, report of assessment between groups, daily reflection record, and questionnaire. The results showed that students participated in lesson activities with a higher motivation of learning and that, with new background knowledge, they could profoundly understand folk songs. In addition, the proportion of the students who wanted to participate again in folk song lessons integrated with other curriculums reached 86.7 percent. Therefore, it is presumed that it is significant to apply the folk song teaching and learning method that helps students to understand folk songs more easily, to feel the sentiments of the Korean people, and to have cultural identity. Based on the results, the researcher made the following suggestions. First, the folk song teaching and learning method employed in this study was made for 12 hours of lessons. Therefore, a method that covers a longer period should be established to deliver a more steady and profound folk song education. Second, this study was carried out based on the 2007 revised curriculum. New studies need to be conducted based on the 2009 revised curriculum.
