This is a qualitative case study aimed to understand living experiences of the mother of a rare-diseased child who cannot lead an everyday life by itself. To do the research, an investigation was conducted into major circumstantial conditions, in order to know how the mother receives support from her family and society and how her life has been changed after her child's symptoms appear in the process of time and space. Participants in this research are 9 mothers, each of whom takes care of a rare-diseased child who cannot lead an everyday life. Unlike in the existing researches, rare-diseased children are not selected only from those with a single disease but also from those with 5 major rare and serious diseases such as muscular dystrophy and adrenoleukodystrophy. In this research, basic substantial materials for understanding the life of a patient and his/her family can be earned when the mother’s or the main caregiver's living experiences and their meaning are known. From the mother's living experiences, can be drawn the understanding of the life of a rare- and serious-diseased child and its family; and the understanding can lead to directions for approaching medical social welfare and a scheme for implementing social welfare. In particular, this research is significant in that it has enhanced the access to and usefulness of welfare services by means of suggesting directions for a local society to intervene in a child with a serious disability and a rare disease and in its family. In this qualitative case study, inter-case analysis and intra-case analysis, and subject analysis are conducted. The inter-case analysis is to investigate how the mother has continuously taken care of the disease in the process of time. The intra-case analysis is to investigate the living experiences of the participants in each of the cases in question from the perspective of time and support from family and social relationships, with a focus on similarities and differences in the participants’ experiences. The subject analysis incorporates issues identified in the above-mentioned cases of family and social support and describes the outcome of the analysis as a subject. The following are the results of the said analyses. Before anything else, the life of mothers with a rare-diseased child can be described in the following manner. First, before a child is not diagnosed with a rare disease, the mother has been stressed due to wrong diagnoses, waste of time and others till she abruptly finds the child's abnormal symptoms in a normal everyday life and gets a correct diagnosis of a rare disease. Second, during a rare disease diagnosis of the child, the mother has to suffer extreme confusion in an unbelievably desperate situation. Third, the mother gradually accepts the reality of her child's disease after she has been shocked by and despaired of the child's rare disease diagnosis. At this time, she comes to set a new goal to overcome and revive the life of her child. While actively struggling to cure her child of the disease, she may sometimes organize, lead and operate a self-help group. Fourth, the mother seriously takes care of her child's rare disease after she accepts the diagnosed disease as a reality in life. In this period, she gradually identifies her own life with that of her child and may increasingly estrange or isolate herself from neighbors except for her own family. Most mothers have physicaly, mentally and socially negative experiences and, in the process, may find a new meaning of her life and transmit the meaning to her family. Family relationship and social support are important social and structural circumstances which affect the life of the mother who has a rare-diseased child, and the following are her experiences. First, a diagnosis of a child's rare disease affects the type and structure of its family, which will be either disorganization or, conversely, more strongly cohesion. Or, the number of the family members is decreased since the child dies early. Second, the mothers’ experiences are different depending on the role of the husband of the mother of a diseased child since he is the most important in her family and depending on the degree of support from her husband. Third, it seems that emotional support from her family is very weak for the mother who is the primary caregiver of a rare-diseased child in the family, most of whose members are also suffering mental stress and emotional depression while taking care of the child. The greatest support has come from her husband of the mother who has a diseased child from the time when the disease started till today. Fourth, the mother may be blamed for the rare disease by her husband and/or his family due to the so-called maternal inheritance of a disease. Such a situation may be a major cause for conflicts and bad relationships between the mother and her family. Fifth, in an extended family, most mothers seem to have support from her native home but indifference or negative response from her husband’s family. The mothers want and expect support from someone but cannot actually ger such since there is in fact no one for her to turn to. Sixth, there is a change in social support for the mother since her child's symptoms initially appear. At the initial stage after the child is diagnosed with a disease, it seems that the mother gets little service from her society. Some mothers get support from self-help group or religious bodies but, in general, all things should be borne by the mother herself. Meanwhile, in this period, the mother can overcome and bear difficulties mainly with the help of her husband’s support and/or her own religious belief. Seventh, as time goes by after a child is diagnosed with a rare disease, the mother encounters a variety of social support, including the government’s support for medical expenses, health and medicine related services, aid services through the activities of social welfare ins
