This Ph. D thesis is about foreign direct investment (FDI) and its impact on economic growth in general. It consists of three related essays: FDI’s influence on national income, foreign investor’s location determinants and satisfaction, and FDI’s effect on local economy. In this thesis, the three issues seem to be independent but highly interrelated since FDIs are keys to economic growth in both national and local levels and also it is crucial to figure out what are the key determinants or factors to attract FDI into host nations and regions. Specifically, in Chapter 2, we studied FDI’s influence on growth for the BRICs countries. Since opening and reform policies, the BRICs countries have been achieving a remarkably high economic growth. Despite their increasing economic power and weight in world stage, FDI and exports of BRICs countries and their influence on economic performance have not been studied so much. After constructing a panel data set which covers four BRICs countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) during the period of 1993-2011, we run several regressions such as pooled OLS, fixed and random effect models to see whether FDI inflows or exports led economic growth. Our study strongly confirmed that FDI inflow as well as exports in the region has contributed significantly to economic growth of BRICS countries. It shows that the open policy such as facilitating FDI and market opening remains invariably powerful growth tools regardless of regions. In Chapter 4, we tried to see whether and how many jobs foreign-invested companies in Busan have created and also how much their sales contributed to the sales of domestic companies, that is, upstream and downstream local companies. Using firm-level data, we tried to see how FDIs have contributed to local economy in terms of direct job creation and indirect linkage effects. Our result showed that FDIs has created a lot of jobs and spillover effects in Busan region. It confirmed again that FDI facilitate job creation and other linkage effects (hence the economic growth) in both national level and regional levels Lastly, in Chapter 3 we asked “what are main FDI location factors (determinants)” to attract FDIs into Busan, Ulsan, and Kyeongnam provinces in Korea. Especially we analyzed whether foreign investors prefer specific determinants in locating the investment and how the preference will actually differ across regions. This study is based upon a direct interview survey on the FDI determinants which was conducted on business CEOs and managers in the regions. And also using non-parametric X2(Chi-square) tests, we tested somewhat fundamental hypothesis, whether or not international firms do value differently among location factors (or determinants). In addition, their correlation was tested using correlation coefficient Cramer V with chosen level of significance (probability P). Results show that there is significant difference between Busan and Kyeongnam provinces in perceptions of important factors such as infrastructures, markets, incentives, firm-level characteristics and also a significant difference of satisfaction with those factors. This implies that international investors do prefer some factors to others and also that this preference differs across regions, Busan and Kyeongnam (including Ulsan) in our context. It also indicates that to attract FDIs regions need to develop very region-specific FDI policies which can better meet the specific needs of investors. Finally, some limitations of this study need to be discussed. In Chapter 2, the empirical analysis was done on the assumption of a unidirectional causality from FDI and exports to GDP. However, this causality can be reversed from actual data or cases. If this were the case, other methods of estimations like instrumental variable technique might be better in performing our tasks. VAR models could be other ways to study the relationship among the FDIs, exports and incomes. In chapter 3, regarding upstream and downstream effect of FDI companies, we could not gather direct data of up- and down-stream companies. Alternatively, we had to directly use labor costs of FDI companies as a measure of job-creating effects of FDI at provincial levels. We did the same way in measuring indirect linkage effects. Considering the difficulty in gathering data on the supplier-assembler-distributer companies, still our study can be a source of information on how foreign firms influence local jobs and local companies. Lastly, in Chapter 4, data used are collected at the local company level by interviewing managers and CEOs, and hence for privacy or security reasons some data were missing and incomplete in the survey data. Our analysis lacks accuracy depending upon the degree of data problem.
