The purpose of this study was to examine in profound and comprehensive ways how elementary Health teachers form their professional identity, describing the system of meanings in relation to the formation. For this purpose, this researcher conducted profound interviews with 15 elementary Health teachers from July 2010 to August 2012. Qualitative data that the researcher collected with transcription and field notes were analyzed through an adapted method based on the Grounded Theory by Strauss and Cobin. As a result, the researcher obtained 15 categories, 35 sub-categories and 120 concepts. The process of elementary Health teachers' professional identity formation can be summarized as follows. Health teachers wish to be nursing teachers. But in deed, 'uncertainty in the range of health affairs', 'increased roles and expectations', 'poor work environment', 'longing for being teachers', and 'little recognition by others' make Health teachers confused about whether they are teachers, school nurses or school administrators. In other words, Health teachers experience a withdrawn sense of being a profession and 'identity confusion'. To overcome these problems, Health teachers surveyed here were using strategies like 'asserting rights in collective manners', 'getting along' and 'personal adaptation'. With these strategies, the Health teachers were concentrating on guiding and caring students with love that they think as fruitful, trying to specialize themselves more in teaching and medicine or settling in nursing provision as they adapt themselves to the frame where they exist. For the subjects, the key category that was consistently maintained in identity formation was 'keeping themselves being a teacher providing nursing' which has three styles, 'focusing on education', 'combining nursing and education' and 'settlement in nursing provision'. Finally, this researcher expects that this study will provide basic information for preparing manuals regarding the range of Health teachers' job, improving promotion and merit payment systems for Health teachers and creating support programs for them, ultimately contributing to the formation and establishment of their professional identity.
