The purpose of this study was to examine the secondary school teachers' perceptions, the attitudes and the practical intention toward sustainable development, analyzing the perceptions, the attitudes and the practical intention in background variables, and to find out the influence factors, basic data and implication on Education for Sustainable Development(ESD) in the field of secondary school. This study was carried out by 205 secondary school teachers in Gyeongnam Area through the documentary survey and questionnaire survey. To analyze the result of this study, using statistical processing by SPSS, we conducted descriptive statistics analysis, the Crosstabulation Analysis in groups (chi-square test). Significance level was p<.005.
The results of the research were as follows:
First, the secondary-school teachers' level of perceptions on sustainable development was mostly high. The level of awareness and participation rate of male middle school teachers in urban areas is high. Also, those who had abundant employment history, majored in related course and worked in the school where the ESD was carried out had higher level of awareness. Meanwhile the school where the ESD was not conducted felt the necessity of ESD.
Second, the secondary-school teachers' attitudes toward sustainable development were generally supportive. They thought economic growth had a limit and nature destruction for human welfare should not be allowed. Also, they thought there were serious environmental problems which couldn't be solved by only a science technology and the mortal power. In the questionaries, they respond the economy growth should be controlled by legal restrictions such as a green taxes. However, though they thought the environmental preservation was more important than a economic growth, they had a stand against a delay in industrial development for nature restoration. According to the results of questionnaire analysis, the attitudes on sustainable development of female middle school teachers, who worked in farming and fishing village, had long service career, and majored in related courses were more positive. And the attitudes on sustainable development of the teachers working in the school where the ESD was carried out were also positive.
Third, the secondary school teachers’ practical intention toward sustainable development was positive throughout the areas such as environment, society, economy. The practical intention on sustainable development of male middle school teachers, who worked in farming and fishing village, had long service career, majored in related courses and worked in the school where an education related with sustainable development was carried out had higher level of the practical intention.
Lastly, the results of this study showed that 60.5 percent of all respondents had the experience of the ESD. and 90.3 percent of the respondents were eager to participate in the ESD. 94.1 percent of the respondents agreed the necessity of the ESD.
The results of the research represented that to increase the social awareness on sustainable development, the respondents thought the ESD was the most necessary to the field of formal education. They thought the way of life should be treated significantly and the curriculum, the data of education, the education budget, and teacher training are needed to the ESD in order. They expected that the lack of expertise could be the chief obstacle in ESD.
