ABSTRACT The Effects of parenting stress and parenting efficacy on parent-child conflict of parents of children with ADHD Park Kyung Ae Dept. of Human Ecology Graduate School of Chonbuk National University This study attempted to examine the differences in parenting stress, parenting efficacy and parent-child conflicts depending on general characteristic variables of parents of a children with ADHD and subtypes of ADHD and the mediating effect and control effect of parenting efficacy in the impacts of parenting stress on parent-child conflicts. The subjects of this study were 643 children and their parents out of 1,722 first grade and fourth grade elementary school students in Jeollabuk-do, primarily selected by Korean ADHD Rating Scale (K-ARS) for parents and teachers, who met the DSM-Ⅳ diagnostic criteria through an interview. For data analysis, t-test, F-test, multiple regression analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were carried out, and to verify the mediating effect, Sobel test was conducted. The main results of study are as follows: First, in the distribution of each subtypes of ADHD, not otherwise specified ADHD was the highest, followed by predominantly inattintive type, and combined type and predominantly Hyperactivity-impulsive type showed the same rate. Second, according to the gender and grade of the children with ADHD, there was no difference between the main variables, and for the difference between the main variables according to the parents' subjective economic level, the lower the economic level, the higher the parenting stress and parent-child conflicts became while the higher the economic level, the higher the parenting efficacy they perceived became. As a result of verification of differences in parenting stress, parenting efficacy and parent-child conflicts depending on the subtypes of ADHD, there was no significant difference in parenting efficacy, and the combined type perceived the highest parenting stress and parent-child conflicts. Fourth, it turned out that there were significant correlations among parenting stress, parenting efficacy and parent-child conflicts parents of a child with ADHD. Parenting stress and parenting efficacy showed a negative correlation, which means that the higher the parenting stress, the lower the parenting efficacy becomes. Next, parenting stress and parent-child conflicts showed a positively significant correlation, which may be understood that the higher the parenting stress, the more the parent-child conflicts becomes. Parenting efficacy and parent-child conflicts showed a negative correlation, so it is found that the higher the parenting efficacy, the lower the parent-child conflicts becomes. Fifth, in the relationship between parenting stress and parent-child conflicts, parenting efficacy had a partial mediating effect. In other words, parenting stress of parents of a child with ADHD has a direct impact on parent-child conflicts, and it also has an indirect impact on parent-child conflicts through parenting efficacy. Sixth, as a result of an inquiry into the controlling effect of parenting efficacy in the impacts of parenting stress of parents of a child with ADHD on parent-child conflicts, it turned out that it was not significant. This study prepared the basis for understanding parenting stress, parenting efficacy and parent-child conflicts of parents of a children with ADHD and confirmed the role and importance of parenting efficacy by identifying the mechanism in which parenting efficacy acts in the impact of parenting stress of parents of a children with ADHD on parent-child conflicts. Keywords: parents of children with ADHD, parenting stress, parenting efficacy, parent-child conflict, mediating effect, control effect.
