Understanding Mass Resistance from Lacanian Psychoanalytic Perspective
This study reviews on April revolution in 1960 and May democratic uprising in 1980, the major cases of mass resistance in comtemporary Korean history from the perspective of Lacanian Psychoanalysis. A purpose of this approach is to understand the practice of resistance of human subject in social context, and to clarify the essential meaning of mass resistance in a dimension of subjectivity.
Modern philosophical approaches including theory of structuralism do not provide enough explanations on the social and political resistance in terms of subjectivity. In that respect, it is necessary to introduce Lacanian theory which provides general explanation of mental structure, for understanding the fundamental meaning and process of resistance practice. This study proposed 'the Real' of Lacan's topology including concepts of unconsciousness, symptom and sinthome would adapt and explain the resistance or its practice in social reality. In a line with the viewpoint, this study suggests 'the schema of resistance practice' to understand a context and process of upheaval from the perspective of Lacanian psychoanalysis. It is composed of five phases, and those are 1) the stable situation with dominant discourses(keeping routine life in neurosis), 2) the unstability of overall discourse order(aggravating symptom in subjectivity), 3) the emergence of mass resistance(passage to act), 4) the genesis of a 'hole' in existed discourse order(changing position toward a specific Other on the level of subjectivity), 5) the change of discourse order(identification with new Other).
This study selected a way of narrative description to analyze and explain two real events of mass resistance since the appearance of resistance as 'the Real' in Lacan's discourse could be grasped only in the context of discourses, particularly at the emerging point of their inability and question on the specific master signifier or discourse.
This study suggests two research problems. One is the changing process of discourse order and the other is 'the death' in the mass resistance. Research methods are literature study, discourse analysis and depth interview. Discourse analysis to the oral texts from depth interview is conducted for explaining the changing process of signification or quilting point in subjectivity.
Result of research could be summarized as follows. First of all, 2 upheaval events were basically oriented from the fissure of founding principles of Republic of Korea as dominant ideology. Dictatorship as a desire of dominant hegemony bloc made the signifier 'democracy', one of main founding principles of nation, emasculating positively. However, the masses who identified with the democracy discourse raised their question on the prime signifier of which national leader had represented at that time and practiced their resistance. As the ruling power who occupied the RSA(repressive state apparatus) repressed the mass resistance, major traumatic incidents occurred and those made the phase of dual relation between a ruling hegemony group and resistant subjects. 'Passage to act' of resistant subjects stopped and broke down the positive order in nation and it finally became a hole of dominant discourse order. After the hole of discourse order appeared, it was politically sealed through the events such as President Lee's resignation and new election in April revolution. Since an alternative hegemony group made a regime change by the election, new social order was symbolically realigned. However, the situation of May democracy uprising in Kwangju was quite different, that is, the hole of positive order on evening 20th May in Kwangju city was violently sealed by repressive army group. Resistant masses were declared as a rebels and enemy of state at that time symbolically by new ruling power. But, their fights and deaths in Kwangju had symbolically remained as a stain which revealed a legitimacy lack of new regime in the discourse order. In this context, sacrifices in May uprising generated the identification with symptom amid people's metal reality in 1980s and it made a new appearance of nationwide resistant masses as a counter hegemony against the oppressive regime. After all, new movement in June 1987 promoted an all-out institutional democratization in Korea through the constitutional amendment that resistant masses had required.
Deaths in mass resistance in this study could be sorted as 'death incident', 'resistant murder' and 'resistant death'. All those could be explained with the concepts of 'death drive(thanatos)' and 'the Real'. Resistant death that a subject decided to resist and to accept possibility of his death was specially meaningful as it can be regarded as a death will. Research showed subjects who decided the resistant death specially in May uprising 1980 could be explained in terms of 'melancholy' onto passed comrades as a imaginary identification with their loss, and futhermore 'jouissance' to become the immortal signifier of themselves.
In conclusion, this study suggests human subject would be defined as a 'resistant being' always and necessarily based upon Lacan's explanation on 'the Real'. And the political, and social resistance is basically oriented from a fissure, limit and inability of the dominant discourse in social reality. And it also showed the resistance is basically question on the specific dominant signifier in subjectivity as a symptom. And this study finally proposes practical implications in three dimensions: a social movement planning as a 'desire of non-desire', implications of Lacanian discourse to discoursive struggle and class struggle and finally emphasizing the social, and institutional respect for all the 'resistance'.
