Effect of Pine Needle Extract on Blood Circulation, Blood Pressure Control, Cholesterol-Lowering and Antioxidant Status in Adults with Pre-hypertension원문보기

High blood pressure a is a global public health problem. Blood pressure is strongly associated with age-specific mortality rates from stroke and other vascular causes.
Pine needle(Pinus densiflora sieb, et zucc), which is known to contain abundant bioactive compounds, has been used to preparing for drink in Asia as a folk medicine such as antihypertension, antioxidant activity, antiproliferative effect and antiinflammatory actions.
This study was conducted in order to assess the effects of pine needle extract on blood pressure along with the blood circulation, cholesterol-lowering and antioxidant status in adults with pre-hypertension.
The study was designed as a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-group intervention study including twenty-nine healthy adults with systolic BP between 120 and 139 mmHg. A 1-week run-in period was followed by an 8-week intervention period, during which subjects consumed capsules containing either 3.15 g/d of lyophilized pine needle extract(PNE) or a placebo.
After the intervention, systolic blood pressure decreased significantly in PNE treated group by 5.5 mmHg. PNE inhibited the generation of serum asymmetric dimethylarginine(ADMA), a inhibit nitric oxide(NO) synthase, plasma endothelin-1(ET-1), a potent vasoconstrictor, Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1(PAI-1), a endothelial plasminogen activator, and the activated partial thromboplastin time(aPTT). PNE supplementation reduced plasma level of total cholesterol and conjugated dienes, a marker for lipid peroxidation, while it increased the activity of total radical-trapping antioxidant parameter(TRAP) in plasma and superoxide dismutase(SOD) in erythrocyte. In addition, PEN consumption resulted in a significant decrease in H2O2-induced DNA damage in leucocyte expressed by % Tail DNA.
Taken together, the present study shows that consumption of pine needle extract may lower systolic blood pressure by modulating vasoactive markers, as well as affect positively on lipid profiles, and antioxidant status and antigenotoxic activity in untreated pre-hypertensive adults.
