This study conducted deep interview to examine which difficulties Vietnamese women marrying in Korea experience, living in Korea or raising children. The study desires to suggest solution to make migrant women have healthy multicultural family by interpreting factors that make them get over difficulties in adjustment process of a double culture and live successfully in Korea through an ethnographic research method.
The summary of analyzed results is as follows.
First, women participating in this study married with fantasy about Korea like ‘Korean Dream’ as many other marriage migrant women. They take a risk about happiness of life to help family in Vietnam economically. In addition, it is ‘escape’ to depart from discord with family and a long poverty.
Second, marriage migrant women who came to Korea with such Korean Dream had many troubles in early adjustment process. This is because they came to strange Korea without preparation in particular, so had much inconvenience and difficulty in daily life by differences of communication, life, and culture. Especially, participants appealed that the chief difficulty among culture conflicts they experience is ‘endless conflict with husband’s mother’. In addition, marriage migrant women believe only husband and enter married life in foreign country, but communication with husband is difficult. Furthermore, most Korean men doing international marriage have no stable job, and their income is not much. Therefore, participants believing only husband are disappointed of their dream and wish to help remained family economically and to depart from long poverty, so experience mental stress. These all conflicts, difficulties, and confusions prove women in multicultural families do not adapt to Korean society and culture yet. Finally, such economic difficulty and conflict in family lead to anxiety about the future and worry about children’s education.
Third, participants approached these all realities in early adjustment process, and can adapt and settle down in Korea, only if they overcome these all difficulties. The study can have discovered some factors by examining stages participants adapt and settle down in Korea. First is to assume the responsibility of their choice, and to let parents worrying them see a happy marriage, because marrying Korean men and living in Korea are choice of participants. In next stage, although participants go to trouble and have difficulty, they conduct much effort to can bear roles as a wife, a mother, and a daughter-in-law in family of settlement process. Passing such stages, participants receive Korea as the second home, and regard Korea as a new home. Finally, they can not only overcome conflicts with family by differences of communication and culture, but also adapt and settle down in a neighboring society. In short, participants admit their limit by international marriage, so try to learn Korean, food, and culture to overcome not only such conflicts but also differences of language and culture.
Fourth, the biggest role is birth of children in process that participants do international marriage, and adapt and settle down in Korean society and family life. Birth of children means a turning point of life to participants. They want to teach and nurture children well by learning Korean and earning much money, thinking children preferentially. Such change of attitude can be confirmed by remittance issue. In the beginning of marriage, their biggest wish was remittance to parents’ home. However, after birth of children, participants gave priority to investment for children rather than remittance to Vietnam. Participants grew as a mother, a wife, and a daughter-in-law through children who are great encouragement to them to overcome all their difficulties. They did not give up in a tight and difficult situation, and overcame this situation through children.
Based on above results of the study, this study desires to discuss actual necessary social supports in adjustment process of a double culture for marriage migrant women, fosterers in multicultural families, in terms of them.
First, the system is needed to make migrant women learn Korean and Korean culture obligatorily in multicultural center to overcome problems occurred by differences of language and culture, the biggest problem, marriage migrant women experience in adjustment process.
Second, to help understanding about migrant women and adjustment of multicultural families such as husband and mother-in-law, multicultural center educates information, language, and culture about homeland of migrant women, and problems and solutions of multicultural families obligatorily to help understanding of migrant women, and to increase adaptability.
Third, aid of the government or local government is needed for job and part time job of migrant women for Korean Dream, the biggest factor to make migrant women come to Korea, that is, for helping parents’ home economically. It is good for each business or organization to employ them to use skills or talents migrant women have from homeland.
