The purpose of this paper is to study the need and range of cooperation with therapists recognized by integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers and supports to the cooperation; provide the basic data to develop effective cooperative measures. The research questions for this study include the followings. First, do integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers cooperate with therapists for the handicapped children? - What is the range of cooperation between the therapist residing in the integrated handicapped children’s home cooperate and special education teachers? - What is the range of cooperation between the integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers and the therapists from other institutions? Second, is it necessary for the integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers to cooperate with therapist? The subjects of this study include: 9 handicapped children from 253 integrated handicapped children’s homes and 124 special education teachers from 35 integrated handicapped children’s homes with permanent therapists in Seoul. Questionnaires were distributed to 8 special education teachers who participated in preliminary survey and 100 persons except for 3 special education teachers in integrated handicapped children’s home who refused to respond. The return rate was 88% and 80 answered questionnaires except 12 unreturned questionnaires and 8 unanswered or insincerely answered questionnaires were finally analyzed. The results were analyzed by using SPSS Program 18.0 and interpreted by calculating percentage and frequency. The findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, as a result of the survey on the cooperation between integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers and therapists, the integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers cooperated with both the therapists residing in integrated handicapped children’s homes and the therapists from other institutions, and the cooperation between integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers and the therapists residing in integrated handicapped children’s homes has a positive effect on the education of the handicapped children. Furthermore 60 respondents(75%) replied that the cooperation with the therapists from other institutions was helpful to the education of the handicapped children. With respect the range of the cooperation with the therapists residing in integrated handicapped children’s homes, 81% replied: the exchange of information, participation in IEP meetings and reflection of opinions, participation as an assistant to teachers, intervention strategies for problematic behaviors and cooperation outside school; 19% replied: participation in plays for the handicapped children and small group activities for the handicapped children in classes, indicating an importance of the cooperation outside classes. With respect to the request for the cooperation between special education teachers and therapist, integrated handicapped children’s homes requested first often. With respect to the methods of request, cooperation through documents was 45%; the exchange of information accounted for a large proportion of cooperation. However, no discussion was made on teaching methods for problematic behaviors and IEP by using the information exchanged. Second, as a result of the survey on the integrated handicapped children’s home special education teachers’ perception on the cooperation with therapist, 80 respondents replied that the cooperation with therapists was needed. As a results of an comparison of the effect of the cooperation between the therapists residing in integrated handicapped children’s homes and the therapists from other institutions on the education of the handicapped children, 74 respondents (92.5%) replied the cooperation between special education teachers and the therapists residing in integrated handicapped children’s homes has a greater effect on the education of handicapped children than the cooperation with the therapists from other institutions. Third, as a result of the survey on the government supports to the development of cooperation with therapists, ‘permanent therapists support’ and ‘seamless exchange of information and cooperation’ regardless of the number of the handicapped children in the integrated handicapped children’s homes were ranked the first and the second, indicating a lack of manpower in the integrated handicapped children’s homes had a great effect on the cooperation by special education teachers. The placement of an agency linking children’s homes and medical institutions for the exchange of information between special education teachers and therapists, ranked the third, by the government was desired. Special education teachers also recognized that there were the limitations in continuing cooperation through documents and telephones and wanted the time support to participate in the conference or meetings for the cooperation with children’s homes and medical institutions the most and also wanted to observe the treatment process of the handicapped children in the medical institutions and share the professional knowledge with therapists as the second and the third rather than to visit the children’s homes of the therapists from other institutions to give a support or to share information.
