Every citizen who lives in Seoul city encounters a certain ‘space’ every day, so called ‘street.’ This term that I used is a public walkable environment, which anyone can use it freely. In that case, people understand how deeply ‘streets’ influences their life style. In 1998, the city started to build up walking-friendly street policies and made big changes until now for almost 20 years. Local organizations are preparing for future environmental government enterprises, which many other parts of streets will change again. But while we witness the streets in Seoul, question marks still pops up to my mind; Would you like to walk through the streets in Seoul? If we feel irritated and discomforted while walking, shouldn’t we have to go through the whole government street enterprises’ again? After these basic questions, I personally thought that Seoul city’s streets are not Pedestrian-friendly yet, and found something important what people almost forgot. Adding essentials and getting rid of unpleasant matters on streets were their main goal, while the emotion or mood of pedestrians were not the case. One of the fastest industrial developments in world history, but also where everybody competes so intensely, didn’t have the concept of ‘Relaxation’ in their minds. To make this clear, a walking-friendly street is a space where you can be psychologically eased while walking. Pedestrians will feel psychologically relaxed if they use Walking-friendly Street. This concept of ‘relaxation’ is lacking in Seoul City streets. Therefore, ‘relaxation’ must be considered as main factor from streets of Seoul in order to reach the goal of designing Walking-friendly Street. This is the reason I started my study and the following steps were used to solve the discussion. First, figure out what ‘Relaxation’ exactly means. I wanted to know how people define the word ‘relaxation’, so I listed many different adjectives on a paper and let them pick the words that are related to the term of relaxation. Second, select few public places and ask people to pick the adjectives. In this case, I assumed the place of relaxation by selected adjectives from previous step and named those places as ‘relaxed spots’, which were my observation targets. Third, observe people’s actions and environment characters from targeted spots. Fourth, gather environment characters and match them with the term ‘relaxation.’ Ask myself how to fill in the concept of relaxation when designing a public space. Fifth, make a checklist of relaxed-environment based on the results of step four. Sixth, go through the checklist and then select a place to repeat virtual simulations using relaxation emotionally to make up the mistakes. Seventh, after several simulations, prove the correlation between pedestrian’s action and the environment that provides relaxation. In conclusion, streets should be designed in a psychological and mental way in order to make it as a ‘relax able’ space. Which that will finally complete the true meaning of ‘walking-friendly’ street.
