The purpose of this study is to identify toddlers’ social-cognitive play behaviors on the responsive interaction teaching with their teachers. The study was carried out with 14 teachers working in childcare centers in Seoul and 92 children under the age of two. The observation method used in this study was as follows : First, to look at the responsive interaction teaching of the teachers, K-MBRS of parent-children interaction behaviors assessment by Kim Jeong-mi and Mahoney (2013) was used. Second, the analysis method for observing toddlers’ social-cognitive play behaviors was a method developed to assess two aspects of play development by combining Parten’s social play categories and Smilansky’s cognitive play categories that adopted Piaget’s cognitive play behaviors, and this method had been modified and complemented by Jo Hye-jin and Kim Nan-sil (2007). During the process of the study, eight teachers, 40 toddlers were recorded for preliminary examination; 14 teachers and 92 toddlers for main examination were recorded, and both are recorded for 30 minutes of play time in the morning, with which teachers’ reactivity was assessed by two researchers in Hansol Happy Parents and Children Institute, who watched the recorded footage just one time; with which toddlers’ social - cognitive play behaviors were observed by researchers and their assistants who watched the footage for 15 seconds and analyzed it for five seconds by watching it 90 times per children. As for study method, first, in order to know general background of the study subject, SPSS 18.0 was used for frequency analysis that calculates frequency and percentage. Second, to analyze reliability of observation methods between observers, Cronbach’s α coefficient was extracted, and third, t-test was used to calculate means and standard deviation, thereby identifying interactive responses of teachers based on their general backgrounds. Fourth, with reactive interaction of the study subject teachers as a median, the teachers were grouped into two, higher and lower groups, in order to calculate technical statistics of each group on toddlers’ social - cognitive play behaviors. Fifth, for qualitative analysis, interaction with the 14 recorded teachers and social - cognitive play behaviors of 92 toddlers were studied. Sixth, the studied material was analyzed at the open coding, axial coding, and selective matrix levels, which is a grounded theory approach for Struass and Corbin (1998), and toddlers’ social-cognitive play behaviors is categorized according to teachers’ interaction upon sub-factor circumstances observed in each research method. The study results are as follows : First, in order to identify teachers’ responsive interaction teaching that influence toddlers’ social - cognitive play behaviors, the relevant concept and scope of teachers’ responsive interaction teaching in children’s play was revealed, which was done by extracting, through open coding, four concepts, 15 sub-categories, and 36 categories, and each scope was analyzed with paradigm models so that conditions (casual and contextual conditions) for factors that influence toddlers’ play guidance main phenomenon, and action and interaction strategies that solve main phenomenon and their results were revealed. Second, in this study, the central concept of teachers’ reactive interaction in children’s play is the “teacher intervention in play.” The causal condition for this is “children’s participatory characteristics in playing,” and contextual condition is teachers’ general backgrounds (age, education level, career, and work experience relevant to toddlers). Such results influence teachers’ responsive interaction teaching, which implies that teachers show different play intervention strategies in children’s social - cognitive play behaviors. Third, intervening condition is revealed to as “teachers’ individual capacity in free play.” In this study the individual capacity is “teachers’ education level.” As the study shows, when children under two year olds play teachers’ responsive interaction teaching is influenced by many factors. In this study, main phenomenon that the participants showed, influenced by many factors, turned out to be the “teachers’ play intervention.” Fourth, when children under the age of two play, to address teachers’ “play intervention,” “teachers responsive interaction teaching behaviors strategies” are required as action/interaction strategies. Last, when children under the age of two play, teachers play with them together (playing with them), share space with them and serve as assistants in playing. In other words, this is teachers’ intervention strategies, who belong to the upper group of teachers in responsive interaction teaching. As a result, it became possible to derive teachers’ intervention strategies in toddlers’ social-cognitive play behaviors. When it comes to playing with children together, teachers serve as co-players, share space with the children, and presents appropriate expression to children’s varied and sensitive responses, which can sustain play time. In group play, rather than take active intervention, only if teachers share space with children and appropriately respond to their activities and responses, and take efficient intervention, group play time can last longer. For toddlers who like to play alone and do not play, teachers need to intervene actively based on the toddlers’ play participatory characteristics. This study is significant given that it is the first attempt to explore that teachers’ responsive interaction teaching is an important variable in toddlers’ social-cognitive play behaviors, and that the study results support the prior study (Klein, 1996, 2003) that teachers’ interaction is related to their negative attitudes such as intrusiveness, commands, and undifferentiated encouragement, which requires childcare centers to pay more attention to their teachers’ responsive interaction teaching in childcare center. This study is closely related to teachers’ responsive interaction teaching and children’s social- cognitive play behaviors. It is hoped that the study results make contributions to increase the quality of child care by requiring teachers to be more attentive to the children based on sensitive observation to serve as facilitator.
